hey guys,

a friend of mine want to buy my FX 8320, ROG mobo and RAM so it may be upgrade time again soon.

this is my current spec

FX [email protected]
crosshair v formua Z
2x4gb corsair xms3 1600mhz
corsair h80i
gigabyte GTX 970 G1 Gaming
antec true power 750w
crucial m4 256gb
OCZ vertex 2e 120gb
1tb hdd

as im going to be looking for a new CPU, i think i would like to go intel and will get another GTX 970, i looked at the anandtech comparisoin here with two GTX 770's
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8227/devils-canyon-review-intel-core-i7-4790k-and-i5-4690k/5
and it looks like about 2-3 FPS difference max with both cards in SLI, so my question is, do i go for the i5 or i7 to power my GTX 970 G1's in SLI?

also, it will be either of the gigabyte/intel bundles and what RAM would you guys pair it up with?

thanks

it all depends on how much i get for my FX chip mobo and ram really.

problem is the £90 difference, will the i5 really bottleneck the 970's that much?

but then again, i could keep the i7 for longer :/

when everyone else here went on about the i5 bla bla bla, i left for a while as it got on my nerves and bought a i7 anyway, never looked back, for me get an i7 as the extra it offers is well worth it,

for gaming anyway, unless you use ram drives, there is next to no difference in 8gb to 16 gb ram or 4 for most users tbh, in any version of a 64bit o/s

h88p://www.pcauthority.com.au/Feature/375815,how-to-how-much-ram-do--you-really-need.aspx

but plenty from a 2gb vga to 3/4 gb model... BF 4 can use over 2GB at 1080p and uses almost 3GB at 1440p or more at higher settings

cpu, current best buys are the Devil's Canyon Core i7-4790K at £249.95 and the Haswell Core i5-4690K at £179.99, for bang for buck, but that was 2 months ago so may have changed now, price between them all depends on what you do, if only gaming, then on a tight budget and a single video card card a i5 will be fine, if not i7 for me is the one to pick, but yes a big difference in price (= £69.96) so for a price of a standard hard drive you get a quicker part, in most apps and games, if only slightly in some, but better in others, depending on writing etc, not to mention OCing either as not everyone wants to do it..., but both will anyway

What extra's do you refer to here?

@OP:

If you look at the differences between an i5 and i7, the difference really is hyper-threading. HT isn't used by developers in games, however possible will be in the next 3-5 years, which then begs the question of why buy something that's not going to be used by the time better and faster CPU's are around and you're upgrading.

For now, for single or dual cards, for gaming where the budget can be spent on a better GPU, the i5 make's perfect sense, they will be last as long as an i7 without a doubt. 2500k are still strong in the gaming market for performance, and look at the 'age' of them.

I'd rather an i5 and a better GPU than a i7 and a weaker GPU.
Remember for games the GPU is the main grunt, BF3/4 can run off a i3 dual core and not have much of a drop in FPS*.

*SLI may be limited, but a single 970 is beyond powerful enough.

No not at all, doubt it will make an noticeable difference in games outside of a very few cases. This however can increase but there are tests where an i5 runs 3 GPUs and was a few FPS behind the i7.

so what do you guys think i should do?
this is what im thinking about
YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte GeForce GTX 970 G1 Gaming 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card £319.99
1 x Intel Core i5-4690K 3.50GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £179.99
1 x Gigabyte G1.Sniper Z97 Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £118.99
1 x Corsair Vengeance Pro Red 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (CMY8GX3M2A2133C11R) £79.99
Total : £708.56 (includes shipping : £8.00).

its £700.56 as i get free shipping, what do you guys think?

i may leave the 970 for now and grab that at a later date or even when i get one of those 34" 1440p monitors

£20 more gets you this:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K CPU & Motherboard Bundle **£43 Saving** £347.99
1 x Inno3D GeForce GTX 970 "iChill Herculez X4 Air Boss Ultra" 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card (C97U-1SDN-M5DNX) **OcUK Exclusive** £299.99
1 x Avexir Core White Series 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17200C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Memory Kit (AVD3U21331104G-2CIW) - White Light £69.95
Total : £727.52 (includes shipping : £8.00).

The Sniper is a nice board but the difference between an i5 and i7 is greater than the Sniper's to the Gaming 7's. As for RAM and GPU, no real difference between them. The top-of-the-range Inno3D's are very good performers with superb and silent cooling.

Nothing wrong with your basket though. Just wanted to show you this alternative because not all chips overclock well, and you have 4.4GHz guaranteed plus the hyperthreading bonus with that i7.

also i forgot to add, when i add a second 970, im going to have to remove my DGX 5.1 sound card, so a mobo with really good sound for my QPAD QH-90's is a must :)

Do you really need to get rid of your 8350? You could try clocking it a bit higher (you can get more than 4.5) and youll be golden for most AAA games which utilise more than 4 cores. Only problem will be single core performance games like Arma etc

If the DGX 5.1 is the PCI-E version, it will fit in any of the three PCI-E x1's or three PCI-E x16's on the Gaming 7 mobo. To leave the space between the GPU's free, you could have it either in the very first top PCI-E x1 slot or the very bottom PCI-E x16 slot.

I see what your saying, but when I get another 970 G1, i think the FX will hold them back :(

Also with the option of dropping a Broadwell CPU in the Z97 chip set gives me abit of a upgrade path
