Been asked to setup a home network. Two PCs and a laptop. Also going to be backing up data on the two machines first and then doing a clean install of windows. Will possibly be installing two wireless network cards to the two machines also.

How much would you guys charge for doing this without taking the pi*s?

In the past I would do all that crap for free but people just taking libertys tbh and its bad enough doing IT fulltime at work to then come home and spend a night doing more IT problems. Basically a guy in my dads work so it isnt really a mate.

either charge a fixed fee for each job or charge per hour. I tend to just charge £15-£20 per hour but i only do it as a sort of hobby for people local to me!

Guy near me does it full time and charges £50ph!!!!

I was exactly the same. I've been an IT techy for 15 years and used to get suckered into doing all kinds of odd jobs that will 'only take a minute'

I now give people a price that they can either like or lump. A reload is £30 minimum for me now.

I used to do a lot of password resets and OS installs for people on my estate for nothing. Mainly old people bless em.

I got quite smegged off with no offer of payment, not even a pint so I started charging. Low and behold everyone started to get their short term memories back.

Saw an ad in the local paper the other day, some guy was offering a complete re-install of a windows system with re-install any software on the system all for only a measley €100.

I normally get roped into fixing computers for people all over the place, have a bit of a reputation as a general fix it man when it comes to computers.

I find that im always helping out neighbours and "friends" with their problems, I've already formatted and rebuilt one neighbours computer 3 times now, which has taken well over an hour each go as he refuses to buy a new computer.

I'm too polite to start charging people! I just keep saying Im busy if anyone asks me to help them fix their problems with computers

Since that is a few hours work then about £50 sounds reasonable although I've built a few computers before and said "just pay me whatever you think is suitable" - has always led to about £20 and a crate of beer per computer which is fine by me. :)
