How often are electricity meters changed?

I've just had a letter telling me that my electricity meter must be changed because all electricty meters are changed after a set period of time. I don't recall that happening before to anyone I know, so I'm asking on here. The meter is probably 13 years old, maybe more, so it doesn't sound too implausible. Maybe I'm being a little paranoid.

The company is Meterplus, which would be right, but the phone number (0800 073 3010) doesn't show up anywhere online that I could find.

I'm being paranoid, right?

Sounds legit to me, Meterplus are part of Npower and meters do get changed when they exceed their certification life.

Contact your providers customer service if you are unsure though.

Indeed you are being paranoid, all electricity ( and gas ) meters, are certified safe and accurate for a certain length of time, usually between 10 and 25 years, depending on the make and model of the meter. The number is correct too, for MeterPlus. Give em a call, and sort an appointment out... after a length of time after its due for re-certification, they can and will go to the lengths of getting a court enforced warrant for access to replace it. Used to work in metering, so I know a bit about this :)

Yes, mine was changed to the new type (small box about the size of 2 tab packets) and removed the massive old unit that was there.

Just let them? Unless the person who knocks on your door has a hoody and a gun, I would not worry. It takes them about 5-10 minutes, if that.

I'd love to see them get at my meter. It's hidden behind a wall unit and has a small access hatch to read the meter. It was like that when I moved in. The cabinet will have to come out (which means taking the work surface off) to get at it.

They should be changed by law every 10 years but that isn't usually what happens! I've come across meters over 30 years old! It shouldn't take long to do depending on where it is and how much the installer sticks to the regulations which i'm assuming he wont, he will probably just rip the old one out and put a new one in without doing any safety checks and renewing the cables ect in which case it will take 10 mins.

I really want mine moved :(
Its in a stupid place in the kitchen which means one cupboard space is completely unuseable.

Right next to the gas meter on the other side of the wall :(

Was told its a ridiculous amount to have them moved, wonder when they come to renew they would move a small distance? Or even to outside, to better assist them in reading meters and make theirjobs easier ;)

It is a ridiculous amount to have them moved! You cant have meters moved from inside to outside or vice versa on a normal meter change visit. Reason being the main fuse or "cut out" is property of the transporter and they would have to move that before you can move the meter which means co-ordinating the whole thing between two companies which is a royal pain in the butt. However, you can have the meter moved a maximum of one meter providing there is a backboard or a sufficient surface for the meter to go on with a normal visit.
