I was doing 2 or 1 lengths of the olympic? sized swimming pool at once and I was puffing. I saw a 45ish yr old guy going non stop. I analysed his technique, it was very different to mine. I use my rear and mid delts to lift my arms out of the water doing the front crawl, he had his elbow pointing to the ceiling as it left the water which meant he didn't use the delts to the extent I was. My head is also always sticking out of the water whereas his was partially submerged all the time.

I think I puff because my muscles are conditioned for short bursts. My cardio should be fine because I go for a jog in the park every week, I think its just my muscles are not conditioned to be that efficient.

Used to swim 60 lengths of crawl three times a week after a weights session while I was still a member of a gym. Can't afford to be now, so none :(

Technique wise, you really do need to get your head down, as it gets you flatter and more streamlined, as well as allowing you to reach further with your arms.

In terms of arms, I've always found that it's a case of "each to their own". However, it is very important to reach as far forward with them as you comfortably can before pulling back, much the same as it is with rowing.

At the moment I am swimming about 3 times a week in a lunch break & do 40 lengths (25m pool). Did 100 when I wasn't limited by time and could have kept going. That however is all with breaststroke. Front crawl & I am dieing after 3 or 4. Guess my technique sucks as well :D

I swim 3 times a week. Do half an hour in the gym and then do 20 lengths breast stoke. Was at 15 a few weeks back so am gradually building it up

Did 32lengths of a 50m olympic pool twice a week at uni. However back home my fitness pool is having a new roof so I can't use it.. annoying since it's taking place over the holiday and is included in my gy membership :/

I used to be a swimming instructor, I felt like I could swim pretty much indefinitely but I think the max I did was something like 60 Olympic lengths - I get bored after more than an hour! I haven't swum for a few years but I'm joining the gym in September so I'll have free access to a pool again, I'll probably swim 3 times a week then.

Tips for a newbie like myself that get over takin by 12 year old girls?

Go get some swimming lessons.

They will teach you to swim with a proper stroke and technique. Once you learn that swimming becomes easy.

You will never be able to teach you self because you cant see what you look like.

I swim 4-5 times a week for up to an hour.

I only really swim freestyle (front crawl), and I can swim pretty much indefinitely if i keep it slow. Though if i go all out, 2 lengths might nearly kill me! It's a lot like walking/running/sprinting, If the effort is low, then you can keep it ticking over.

There's loads of advice on the net on how to swim, the OP is doing it all wrong with the head up style. The best advice is to find an swim class and get taught the basics, then fine tune what works for you.

If you want to stop being beaten by 12 year old girls, you will have to practice more than them :)

I must be one of the worst swimmers going tbh. My tech is crap so i can probably do about 50m before drowning :D. I'm quite a fit lad as I play rugby. It's just poor tech the screws me over! That along with the fact that I very rarely go swimming.

I very rarely swim and when I do its 99% breast stroke. I wouldn't say I am good compared to a swimmer but I have a confident yet relaxed swimming style. If I was just cruising I would probably be able to do a fair few laps.

I was about to post basically the same thing. :p

I swim about 3 times a week in a 20m pool and try and do about 120 lengths, usually split into sets of 40, mixture of strokes. Trouble is its hard to get any rhythm in such a short pool, especially doing freestyle. You do see some shocking technique in the pool though.
