How often Should I upgrade?

Hi,

Considering upgrading my pc in a month or so, was just wondering the general opinion of should i upgrade to a totally kick-ass pc(£1-2k+ ava) and keep it for a while, or would it be wiser to upgrade every year or so for a more moderate sum?

I mean a totally kickass pc would easily do a few years, but you could also u/g to really decent specs for ~700ish a year no problems...

That and you could sell on your old gear for a better sum each year, reducing u/g costs...

I generaly wait until my system can no longer handle up-to-date software, or a major component shows signs of failing. This has roughly worked out at around every 5 years for my usage (don't play games), and I then tend to spend around £400 - £500 on a new base unit.

This isn't really a question that anyone apart from you can or perhaps should answer. It depends entirely on you, how you use your PC and what your income source is like.

For the little it is worth I spend a fair sum on a PC every few years and then more or less leave it alone, it might not be the most cost effective way as I'm simply writing off the parts after a few years and get nothing back for them (usually passed on to family/friends) but until fairly recently I've been in full time education so my income source has been fairly meagre with lump sums coming in every so often.
