How often should you go for a drive?

So i have a car that i seriously enjoy owning but i dont often get a chance to go out for a proper drive. Sometimes its due to being busy but mostly its because i dont often *need* to drive anywhere.

I walk to work and back, i live very close to a supermarket so walk there and back usually. I drive long distance (for me, 1 hour+ each way) once a month or so but other than that its usually just short 10-15 min trips once a week at most that i need to do to visit people or collect things. My house is pretty central to a few groups of friends so odds are people to come to me instead of me visiting them :\

As of this moment my car has been on my drive for 8 days after getting back from a big weekend away and im worried that it'll affect the battery lifetime, having just had it replaced due to the previous not holding its charge properly.

So, is there a recommendation to go out and drive around at least x times a week or anything and any suggested amount of time to drive?

Cheers for any advice,

Get a battery maintenance charger thingy. I forget the name of the good ones, but Rotty bought one for his Porsche. It will keep your battery in good condition.

I can't really understand why you'd not take the car to the supermarket though regardless of how close it is. Carrying heavy carrier bags home on foot versus chucking them in the boot seems like a no brainer to me .

Little and often works well for food that i can pick up on the way back from work, rarely would there be enough for a giant feast in the kitchen. Will have to look in to a battery maintenance tool of some kind, thanks.

now the weather is getting better why not drive out to a country pub in the evening for meal with your mates, do you have a mountain bike, you could get a bike rack and go places, you have the freedom of transport to go anywhere you care.

Failing that as clarkey said battery top up thing would be better than letting it drain.

i work less than 1mile from home.

i drive to work, after work i drop of a friend then often end up doing 50ish miles hoonin around lanes cos im bored and have nothing to do. Hell sometimes i finish work and do 300+ miles "just for fun". Finishing at 11pm and getting home at 3am is a tad strange

Yeah i need locking up.

Used to do this a bit during the winter anyway but you're right, with summer here its time to go further afield and sample some new places :D

shock post :)
stop walking to work :p
If i have to go to work early i usually drive in because there are actually parking spaces available, going in after 8 means it takes longer to find a space and walk to my building than walk straight from home :(

Yes, yes you do, off to the institute :p

I go out for a "drive" whenever I feel like it.

Usually when the weather is good, the temperatures are such that driving with the windows down is pleasant, and I have nothing in particular to be doing except for enjoying the drive.

I do just this. I have no reason to use the car, public transport to work, and around Reading is good enough, but I use the car for random drives simply because I enjoy it, and will go out for a couple hours at a time enjoying the drive, normally do it once a week. :)

Although lately I've been using the car daily (due to doing stuff that needs it). :/

My ~7 mile commute home from work has been known to take upwards of 50 miles on a nice evening when I don't have anything particular to do.

the *need* is to go out and enjoy your car. Which is getting harder and harder with all the new road regulations coming out every 5 minutes.

Enjoy it now while you can. Before driving for pleasure becomes a crime.
