How old is too old?

Look at most of the elderly people today, all they do is sit in their homes and watch crap TV, maybe trot along to the supermarket once a week. They could only dream about learning about a computer works and what the uses are. If I live into my 70s I'll still be leading 300 man sieges

Can I just say that i echo this heartily and agree 1000%. When im old and crusty and have all the time in the world then I will probably be doing the same, and gaming by then will be virtual reality standards I imagine where you won't need as much physical control to play (as long as your mental faculties are all there I guess). Additionally, should a holodeck be invented, recreating certain activities with all my favourite movie stars will also be a favoured pastime. :D

Sure, fine, but understand that this is down to your own personal and clearly pretty serious issues with forming and maintaining personal relationships, and does not reflect the experience of the vast majority of the rest of us.

Not at all, I have several solid dependable friends and an extremely close friend, I speak to the latter the majority of the day and see her regular. People who know me properly who aren't fickle people understand how I am, that I'm not the type to desperately try and rush myself into being social all the time, it's in extreme moderation in my case. I had upwards of 40 consistent friends in College, I've whittled that down to about 5 or 6 and it's much better IMO.

I have no issues forming and maintaining personal relationships, lmao.

People seem to need constant attention to bother considering somebody a friend, people like that are the ones I turned my back on because 99% of the time they are fake. Some people haven't heard from me in several weeks, but when they do it's back to how it was. Those are true friends.

what you do for fun is your business and no-one elses. As long as you have a life outside of gaming I don't see that many people would care

Actually scratch what I say above anyone over the age of 12 should stop gaming especially online until they are at least 30, then perhaps we can have some games that are not COD clone shooters that the mindless ***** seem to lap up!

You're just jealous because your reactions and hand-eye coordination are rubbish :D

From what you wrote and the very specific language you used, I would have to say that is BS. Everything I highlighted in this and your last post rings warning bells, you clearly have some bitterness/issues about whatever it is you've experienced with other people welled up inside.

Daft topic, only difference age makes is how expensive the toys are and that doesnt apply to just gaming. Colleague at work stunned at me spending £350 on a graphics card, then showing off her £500 handbag.

2011 study showed average age of gamer 30 years old, game buyer 35.

What I wrote wasn't 100% serious, if you want to take it as gospel then go ahead. I'm aware of my situation and I'm very happy with what I've done over the past year, I don't think your settee psychiatry is really required.

Most people are ****, targeting the ones in your life who aren't and doing away with everyone else = win. If I'm required to fly out the front door every day in some lame attempt to be considered 'social' in order to avoid being labeled as somebody with issues, I'd rather not.

Ok. ;)

Its just a form of home entertainment, anyone at any age can play games. I have known gamers from all ages, max being in there 50's. Hell even me old ma plays games and she's nearing 60! Whoever tells you that playing video games is for kids obviously thinks they spend their free time in a more productive way, which is fair enough, maybe they do... Some hobbies are more productive than others, if we all spent are free time the way Joe Blogs says we should, this world would be a boring place.

I would agree a lot of people are fake *******s (why do you think smalltalk was invented, it isn't because they care it's because they feel uncomfortable if they aren't ****ing talking 24/7)

Society is ridiculous in general, social norms are stupid as is tradition. But I put up with it because eventually you find likeminded people.
I'm not a codependent guy you know, unlike a lot of people I'll happily go out for dinner by myself, or to the pub by myself. A lot of people don't get the value behind enjoying your own company, doing your own thing.

I guess what I'm trying to say is, acknowledge most people are ridiculous, but also take note. Theres plenty worth meeting, you can't live life if you spend ALL your evenings in at a computer. Nothing wrong with some, just not all.

Exactly. I put up with it, but now I don't need to anywhere near as much as I've found worthwhile people. It's the way forward!

Unless you are being sarcastic.

Seriously, you class gaming as childish but watching ****-factor is not?

Gaming is a hobby, or in a few cases a profession, in the same way sticking airfix models together, playing football, doing a tapestry, playing cards or watching tv is. Sure some hobbies are more beneficial to health and wellbeing than others, but if you enjoy it and it is a relaxation from the trials and stresses of real life do as you see fit no matter what the age.

Yep, was just presenting the most common voice of dissent that you hear from those who vehemently believe that video games are solely for children. A friend of ours once described the wife and I as "not real grown-ups" to her son, because we play video games regularly. Apparently being a real grown-up entails sitting at your kitchen table all day smoking or posting pointless drivel on Facebook.

Guess who he likes better, eh?

When I die, they'll be prying an MX518 from my cold, dead hands.

i think pc gaming is mainly an adults thing, there are exceptions though but i think pc's are adopted by gamers who have gamed on consoles in the past. Thats what i did anyways, i couldn't even afford a gaming pc until i could earn my own money :D

Thank **** for that. You had me worried for a minute. :)

I'm almost 32 and have no intention of stopping while I still enjoy it, it's a normal hobby like any other to me but I don't make a big thing about it or quote it on my CV as there is still a stigma attached to gaming no matter what I think.

There are people who spend too much time playing games, if you get an MMO character to level 80 in a week then you have way too much time on your hands and should probably get outside a bit more :) but then being obsessive can be true of any past-time or hobby not just gaming but unfortunately gamers tend to get the bad press when some idiot decides to play non-stop for 3 days and dies of exhaustion.

My Mum at 57 is a gamer too which pleases me no end, spent time with her yesterday demonstrating how to use the forge etc. properly on Skyrim on her 360 :)

Well it's much like anything from the perspective of someone who does not do said activity. I'd imagine most people who do not game or were never really that interested in it will say it becomes childish at some point. For example, most young tech orientated people here probably think that elderly people who love gardening as a pass time are boring. Just another part of the human condition. :)

Another 50+ gamer here, happily killing what I can in BF3 and Arma2. I attribute gaming to me having sharp reflexes compared to non-gaming grey hairs. Leisure Suit Larry anyone ?

I can't wait to grow my own fruit and veg when the wife and I get a place with a garden, not going to turn into The Good Life (mmm.... Felicity Kendal circa 1975) or anything but having my own fresh fruit will be fantastic.

I've heard all sorts of criticisms of gaming, ranging from opportunity cost and obesity, to the Daily Mail's favorite - mental illness. But its always been the 'you're not a proper adult', or somehow emotionally under developed if you play games, that's really annoyed me.

The problem is that I've never really heard any good counter's for it. 'I do it because I enjoy it' never seems to be enough to swing the argument. Most of the posters here are probably right, as long as what I do isn't harming anyone, then why should I care what others think? But it still irritates me. It would be nice to have a witty put-down or comeback for this type of stuff. They don't seem to understand OMG LoL *shocked-face*, FUUUUUUUU. I don't know why, damn noobs.

Why is it any different from sitting watching tele all evening? Is usually my line.
