How old is too old?

Im 46 and still play pretty much every day.

Time becomes a problem once you have a family but my son is now 9 and we oftern play online together :)

I cant see me ever stopping or see a reason why i should need to, yes it becomes a problem when some kid keeps kicking your ass all evening long but its still fun.

We have between my son and my self 2 decent computers, 2 xbox 360's and 2 PS3's, os we have a good choice of what to play on :)

Awesome :D

My daughter is only 2 but she's already a gamer on the iPod touch, can see her wanting to play computer games on other devices with me before long too!

my dad is in his 50's and still likes the occasional dungeon trawler. my friends dad is also in his 50s i think and regularly plays the shooters with his son and whoever happens to be with him at the time (sometimes me when they need to make the numbers up). there's a couple of people in the CARS forums who are pushing 70 and still love to pound it round the track.

you;re never too old for gaming if its what you enjoy doing :)

The type of people who look down on people for having hobbies like playing video games, making models, being interested in building computers, or anything else that's not considered "normal" or "mainstream" enough, are probably the same people that if you say "I don't drink" they give you a dirty look, and ask "well what do you do for fun then?".

How very true. I'm a collector of 1/6 (not at all mainstream) and an avid PC gamer (ever so slightly mainstream) and I don't drink alcohol (I simply don't want to) and the mention of either one is prone to some raised eyebrows and rude comments.

How dare a 40 year old not drink but spend some time playing Sleeping Dogs or Fallout New Vegas instead! I dare.

PC gamings will always be ahead of console gaming in my eyes. Plus you have more freedom^^
I'll always own a powerful PC over a console for life.

im 35 and love pc gaming . tho the wife thinks i spend to much time gaming hehe. my 4 year old daughter likes pc gaming to lol :D

I don't know any witty/funny put downs but for me it's about escapism mostly, when I read an amazing book or watch a superb film I want to be there and experience it first hand which is obviously impossible but being able to inhabit the 'world' like in LOTRO and control (in a limited way I grant you) the destiny of my character is an experience and riding along on horseback with Weathertop in the distance and thinking about the history of the world and the adventures I can have pleases me no end.

Oblivion ticked so many boxes for me as it put me in a beautiful world (even vanilla with the dodgy textures) and I was free (in a limited sense again) to live a life of adventure, what's not to enjoy?

I think gaming still has a long way to go, for all the technical and graphical improvements we still only have a handful of games with truly great stories. I hope over time more resource is spent on crafting games with deep meaningful stories which really touch you rather than being bland kill 10 of this, fetch 10 of that tripe which fill many modern games.
Now this I can get behind.

The thing is "gaming" is such a blanket term for an incredibly wide variety of interactive audio/visual entertainment, compared to TV and movies which is passive entertainment.

You have things from angry birds and similar trivial "time-wasters" - facebook "games", to repetitive indulgences - such as multiplayer PvP shooters, driving games (anything where you repeat the same scenario/activity and it boils down to skill as to how well you do each time you play), to sandbox roleplaying games, to interactive "movies" with stories deep enough to be one.

You CANNOT use that one term to define the lot. It's like comparing an Attenborough documentary with Big Brother or Teletubbies, or Eastenders with Gladiator.

In general it's better to ask the person why they like doing the activity - what the motivation is behind their enjoyment of a certain game; whether it is to kick some ass on BF3 after a hard days work as a method of relaxation, to explore a virtual country (ie skyrim), roleplay a character and indulge/immerse yourself in a fictional universe (people do that with books don't they?), or whatever.

Personally I think facebook games and such are a complete waste of time - if you're going to do some interactive entertainment, have a proper experience. I'd say it's like saying you're a food critic when all you eat is mcdonalds, compared to eating at a fancy restaurant with proper stuff. ;)

So I just turned 38 and my girlfriend is 28 and would chide me about my gaming habits.

So, I sat her down in front of the pc and made her play Amnesia, she didn't leave the pc for the rest of the evening ;)

She dutifully apologised ( in the Adult way)

My usual response to people is' I want to make drama not watch it'
I prefer my entertainment to be interactive...we are waaayy beyond Tetris tbh

at least when im gaming my mind is occupied and thus in later life my mind is likely to stay sharper than if i spent the whole time i did gaming in front of the tv. sometimes i watch tv in the evening, and fall asleep on the couch at 10 even if its a show i like, when im gaming that doesnt happen.

I'm sure I was told gaming was the worlds leading form of entertainment. It has already taken over the film industry I believe.
Heard this from somewhere.

So if this is true, there's nothing wrong no matter the age.

If you enjoy something, and this to applies to everything, then continue until you physically can't.

I've certainly noticed my reactions aren't what they used to be but it doesn't stop my enjoyment.

I love how the Young tell us we are to old when it was our generation that started it all. :p

Gamer till I die. :D
