How old is your PSU?

I've recently gone through a big upgrade with my PC, but i kept the existing PSU. It's a good'n, a Be Quiet Dark Power Pro 650w. But it's 10 years old now.

Looking at it it's rated to Gold standard only, i see there is now up to Titanium. I've also recently started using a power monitor plug with my PC and, a 'good' day with the PC on, sometimes idling, several hours at full power playing a game, it costs me about £1.00 per day.

So i'm curious whether a new Titanium rated PSU of similar wattage (would probably go upto 750w instead), would help? Then i got to thinking about the age of my current PSU and whether it would 'blow' sometime soon given its age.

How old is your PSU?

I'm still running a Corsair HX520W Modular PSU which I bought in 2008 for £64
Although I do have a newer one sat here in a box for next time do a major rebuild.

Components, especially capacitors do age and have a finite life at their expected operating values/tolerances.
Ten years is pretty good, but since efficiency gets worse with age, you are doing the right thing by upgrading.
Maybe keep your BeQuite as a get-out-of-jail spare, or tester unit when you are done.

Until a couple of weeks ago I was running an HX850 which I bought in around 08/09....

Then I was having some issues and thought it was worth replacing regardless of whether it was the cause, so picked up a 1000w Phanteks AMP

My EVGA G2 550 has just passed its 7th birthday. My other PSU a Superflower 550w platinum is 5-6 years old 'ish, Not sure how old it is though as my OCUK order history goes back to 2019 & I know I bought it before that.

Corsair hx620w and a 520w in my computers here along with a vx450w corsair used 24/7 in my server. these were purchased in 2008 or sooner so still doing the job after 15 years. Oem for these was seasonic

If you can tell me the:
- typical hours (per day) you're using the PC at idle & the hours you're using the PC at load
- the idle and load wattage (at the wall, preferably)

then I can run the numbers for a titanium PSU.

ermmm, I think mines a Corsair TX650 from about 2008 IIRC!

Thought it sat on a shelf for about half of that time unused!

My PC is a bit of a beater mostly running low end and older parts so nothing that would really stress it. I’d buy a new one if I was building a new pc with modern components

Glad to see I’m not the only one on here still using a PSU from the noughties :D

My server (that serves the website in my sig) uses a Super-Flower SF500P14FG that is now 11 years old. Though it runs at low power most of the time (<100W), it's on 100% of the time, in a completely passively cooled system. I will keep using it until it dies, which I don't expect to happen for a long while yet.
