do i earth myself? i now believe i must be an extremely static person as i just dont understand why mobos keep breaking on me lately! lol so investing in a anti satic wristaband may help but what do i attach it to?

are there any other ways of earthing myself??

also would a miss placed mobo stand off short out a board?

attach it to a radiator...i think theyre earthed through the house

You can earth yourself buy touching the psu with the power cable still plugged in i think aswell

I always use radiators to earth myself initially then keep tocuhing the metal on the case whilst build. Oh yeah also don't build on a carpet, build on a solid surface and floor. Also once built if you need to amend anything like ram seating or gfx leave the power supply plugged in but switched off at the wall. This should earth the entire case are you once you touch it.

carpet ay? i build on a desk which is solid but would the carpet still create static through me?

how often would i be needing to touch the psu/radiator every minute? 5 minutes?

Yes if the floor is carpet then that will build up static. Try to discharge yourself as often as you can but as you have an anti static band you should just be able to attach this to a radiator and bang out an entire build.

thats probly what it is! i dont have carpets at home so its never been a problem before but now at uni carpets everwhere! dam uni accomodation, il have to build in the kitchen hehe

I'd be willing to bet it wasn't static that killed your previous motherboards. Damage from static is very very rare.

fit the psu into the case, dont turn it on but have it plugged into the wall. this will earth the case. when touching motherboard etc make sure one hand is on the case (a metal bit obviously!)

omg, this must be the most sensible post ever. what the hell am i on about i dont even do this. i have never earthed myself. i just grab it all and chuck it in without even thinking of static. never had a problem to this day, even after about 8 builds

Same as really ;) I think thats the case with most people tbh

yea im betting its not static you like have a 1% chance of static killing components, iv had ram, my cpu and my graphics card being chucked all over my bed over the past months and im pretty sure they fine!

Uni drunkness could be a cause! :D

Before i put my hands inside the case,i just touch the brass coupling on the radiator with my big toe as this is unpainted and therefor a good conductor as all plumbing is earthed as a rule,
At least starting your putor up for the first time you can rule this out and look @ somit else, like vista not recognising my DVD drive lol
