Hi guys, been away for pc gaming for a few years, my current desktop has the following spec:
Computer spec:
Intel core 2 quad CPU q6660 @ 2.4ghz
Nvidia GeForce 8800gtx
4gig of ram
Vista 64

I have tried a copy of MW black ops and that ran ok.

Do you think it will run bf3 and any newer titles coming out in 2012?

Suppose what I also want to know, is it worth upgrading gfx card etc or just start again or does it still have some life left in it?

I ain't too botherd about maxing out the gfx options, just getting a decent fps rate.

Thanks for your help.

Its not to bad, thought about overclocking your cpu?

You could invest in a new card, AMD (ATI) have a new range of gpu's coming out shortly.

Agree with RJC. OC that bad boy, it's surely got a lot more oompf in it and get a newer graphics card.

I think your 8800GTX may struggle with the likes of BF3 as to play it on high settings at least you will require a bit of power and dedicate video card memory. As to what you get though entirely depends on your budget but with the new cards coming out, hopefully we will see price decreases in the 6900 range :)

Yeh I agree with the guys above OC your CPU and couple it with a good GPU. may also want to upgrade RAM aswell.

Cheers for advice, will have a look into a new gfx card, what kind of times are we looking at for the new batch to come out, then Hopefully the current crop will reduce in price a little!

When u say upgrade ram, do you mean add more? What would be the optimum versus affordability, double to 8gig? Or does type/make affect performance more?

I need to get reading up on all of this!

Am gonna buy bf3 today and see how it goes!

I think you be ok with the ram for the time being, AMD will be launching new cards early Jan .

Only decided to upgrade my Q6600 today, but I run mine at 3GHz with an ATI 5850 and it runs BF3 nicely if you turn some of the shiny stuff off.

sorry to OP as my question isnt about this thread but to

rpmmatt

1st of all i think ur sig maybe too big from what ive seen you can only have 4 lines of text

2nd i see in your sig you have the antec 1200 case whats it like as ive just ordered one lol im hoping you say its good lol

Editied, thanks for pointing it out.

As for the Antec 1200(Mine is from 3 years ago, so it may have slightly altered since then), very good. Only 2 tiny issues.
1--Since the PSU is at the bottom of the case, then the power cord to the Motherboard can be a little bit of a stretch (depending which board and PSU of course)
2--THe HDD's fit in banks of 3 behind the fans, depending how you arrange stuff can be a fiddle to attach swap sata cables without undoing the bolts and sliding the drives foward especially if you have a large GPU, minor annoyance really.

My friend has a very similar system

He had some problems playing BF3 with a 8800GTX and upgraded to a GTX480 which now plays it sweet - so If you upgraded your GPU, you'd be set

If you could clock your CPU, that would also help a lot, should be good for at least 3.0ghz, maybe more depending on the cooling

If you could double the RAM to 8GB you'd then have a sweet system, but at a guess you're probably using DDR2, which is fairly expensive unfortunately

thanks my psu has a very long power cable so that wont be an issue and doesnt sound like the 2nd thing will annoy me either

thanks for letting me know this will be my first full tower case as ive had quite small ones before and its anoyyed me have very little room so i shud be happy with this case as reviews say its a big case and lots of airflow

so thanks again :)

i'm in exactly the same situation. q6600, 4gb of ram, 260gtx. Bought myself a SSD. Going to invest in 4gb more of ram and maybe a new graphics card once the new batch comes out.

Games are all certainly playable and this system has been rock solid for me so i'd rather get another year or two out of it.

SSD is a good upgrade, although it may be better value to go for a DDR3 board and 8gb of that as it's so cheap. I think SB is a decent upgrade from a quad core

Your system is fine. Maybe the GPU needs updating and an SSD would make it a lot snappier. Don't feel pressured into overclocking, but if you are comfortable doing it then it could give you some nice free performance increases.

It would depend on the price really.

SSD was a must and with the 5% voucher and free shipping I think it was a steal. I get most of my kit second hand from the MM so I think when a 69** comes on in January i'll grab one of them.

Sata3 mobo, proc and ram. Is what i'm really waiting for, but if i could get another year out of my current setup i'd be happy with it. Don't think i'd get much value out of selling my setup as is.

Thanks again for all the replies and info, certainly a lot to consider. I would prob OC as a last resort as its not something I am familiar with doing, the CPU was overclocked to a certain degree when I got it, so will check that option is still turned on in my settings. I think I will likely go for a new gfx card in a few months and then look at price of ram (and check what type I have)

I am fairly happy with the comments received though as I paid a fair bit for the system when I got it around 4 years ago.
