"A Need for Speed game has been Christmas number one for four of the last five years, with FIFA only pipping it to the post last year in a debatable count back," says Steve Farrell, senior product manager at EA.

"We are confident the increased quality of the game this year – as well as our extensive marketing campaign, with support throughout the run-up to Christmas – will help to re-establish a Need For Speed game at number one."

Seriously EA, how out of touch are you with the gamers right now?

You realize people actually do buy this stuff? Why don't you check out all of EA's previous dud releases; a lot of them do terrifyingly well.

I just can't see it happening at all this time round. I recall Most Wanted being No.1 but no way can PS get there, not after the shambles that was carbon. I think they're letting the brand name go right to their heads.

Shambels in your oppinion. I found it rather good. However it wouldnt supprise me at all if it did get number one.

People that are not so computer savy will get it:(

People that all they know is if you put the disk in the game will play, those types of people will buy this game just because OMG Its Need for Speed!!! :(

Tis a sad world when **** can be sold:(

Yeah, not to mention you have people who will be buying Xmas presents for others.... If a game is well marketed and given good product placement in stores, it will be bought.

Love them or hate them, EA are damn good at selling games, I can see this game being No.1 at Xmas no problem.

I hate EA, and the prostreet demo was awful. But still, try telling that to all the 10-16yr olds who don't really know a good game when they see one and get their parents to buy it them for Xmas.

Wish I had £1 for every Bratz and Hannah Montannah etc. game I've had to buy for my little one's.

Nurf, there's too many good games on the horizon for Xmas and given that the game is just a week away I can't see it holding out for too long. I actually see a certain Mario game holding the top spot unless Mass Effect and the upcoming PS3 xmas titles are as good as we all expect.

k I skimmed through the "sauce" and I have to agree with EA over the games you guys on the thread have mentioned such as Mario, Mass effect ect.

NFSPS being on ALL the platforms gives it a big edge over exclusive titles.

P.S I was disappointed with the game too :(

It most likely will, Underground 1 and 2, as well as Most Wanted were all Christmas number 1's. So this has a good chance too.

It's one of the biggest franchises this Christmas and the only one that comes to my mind at the moment (I just woke up though) that's multi-format with a universal audience (i.e. Kids and Adults).

Think logically though. How on earth will a single console exclusive game outsell a multi platform game?

I think the last 4-5 years of xmas sales have been NFS every year and FIFa the year it wasn't all EA, multi-platform.

Mario has a limited market tbh and so do games like Mass Effect no matter what people on forums like this believe. If you said to most people "Mass Effect will rock because Bioware made it and they rule with other sci-fi RPG games" people will be like "ermm....what is KOTOR exactly?".

These "critically acclaimed" single player games (Bioshock, Mass Effect etc) do not have mass market appeal like your FIFAs and NFS games. (rightly or wrongly).

I think people on this forum are probably more out of touch than EA ;)

As much as we debate and argue over what are the 'best' games, those that make it to number one often include the yearly Fifas, movie tie-ins like Spiderman the game and popular franchises like NFS regardless of the quality of the game.

Actually, they are very much in touch with what the consumer wants. It's just a shame so many people want the same old boring stuff. EA are so successful because they are able to deliver to satisfy the public's demands.

Good points raised. It'll be interesting to see how it all plays out, I just can't see it happening this year imo.

How is mario going to be top when no one can get the console to play it? Mario would easily be the christmas number 1 if nintendo weren't actually noobs and had consoles on the shelves. Mass Effect is more of a gamers game. Not many people will buy it at the start but then word of mouth will hopefully increase it's sales. Shovelware has been christmas number 1 for as long as i can remember because it's available in mass on all platforms.

Nintendo aren't 'noobs'. After 12 months the console is still in demand more than anything else on the planet. And it's not like they aren't selling huge numbers either.

Microsoft and Sony would kill to be in Nintendo's position right now.

 Nintendo aren't noobs, they are manufacturing unprecedented numbers of machines for a demand that simply no one was expecting. Add to that the Wii has a massive user base already and I think the potential for sales is already there for Mario Galaxy.

I agree though that its more likely to be a multiplat release at no1, like NFS or the Golden Compass (If the film is a huge as they expect). Guitar hero is probably ready to sell huge but the price of a full pack will eat into some sales. What else is there to challenge NFS this xmas?
