How poor is local radio

I don't normally listen to local radio, but my wife does and the quality seems to be really poor.

Our local station is Invicta FM, and despite their claim to be "Kent's best mix", they play the same songs several times a day.

With the wealth of great music out there, they seem to have just prostituted themselves to the highest bidder, playing rubbish just to get it high in the charts.

At the moment, if you listened for a few hours you would hear the same Mika, Snow Patrol and other songs several times. When they get a bit adventurous and play a 'classic' they always play that song from Dirty Dancing!

The DJs are the bland no-opinion of their own type, who think everything is fabulous. I seriously can't believe they like every song they play but never, ever criticise anything.

They just though of a new idea, which is some retarded guy on the phone who they poke fun at, I seem to remember Moyles doing that 5 years ago, hardly original.

Everything is sunny, and you can bet that as soon as the sun comes out they stick on Will Smith - Summertime!

It really is poor quality, dumbed down, bland and repetitive - nothing more than a mouthpiece for whichever record company is paying.

And if I hear the phrase "Love the show" one more time I will smash the radio!

I hate local radio presenters, It's just pure cheese

Male Presenter : Stay tuned and I'll tell you how I ordered a big mac last night.

Female Presenter : OHHHH LOL your so funny your so funny.

Freda plays pop ARRGGH, for all those who live in stoke.

On another note, do we actually need DJs? Does anyone actually think they contribute anything to radio? Could we not just have a technition queuing the songs and ads, and just have a presenter to do the news/weather?

Quite like Signal1, although freda plays pop is absolutly terriable

LOL here is their playlist, it says new additions - but that's actually about their entire playlist. I think they just have an iPod on shuffle tracks.

I was even in the car for the switchover from one show to the other recently and they played the Fray 10 mins before the end of the first show and then again 10 mins into the next show - at least they didn't have to change the CD I guess.

IMO radio1 has turned really poor atm, it's the same songs whenever i turn that goddamn station on :o

also, does it make anyone elses teeth grind when they play a totally awful song and the presenter says something like "i love that song"

The songs are the same as any other non-specialist radio station. You're going to hear the same anywhere.

The radio presenters are, however, far better.

Radio 1 is only good in the morning and at night, the rest is rubbish.

Would you count community radio the same as local radio? Im a tech for a community radio station that plays all different sorts of music and has lots of interesting things on the go. We have just been granted a full time license by ofcom and are due to start broadcasting in autumn this year.

A lot of local radio stations are actually the same. That is, the music is piped from a central source for non-call-in/request shows, as is some of the news.

Only the presenters and traffic bulletins vary.

For one of our local stations, the presenters on the morning show are in different towns and linked to the studio by t'interweb - they're all at home, prob lounging around in pjs! - so it sounds like they're all in one place when it's broadcast, and the overnight programmes are all pre-recorded on the day before (with the news bulletins piped in from the central provider so it sounds live...)

Maybe its just that I've reached a certain age, but I find the radio 1 DJs behave like cretinous teenagers. If I'm travelling outside of the south-east and can't get XFM (the DJs still suck but at least the musics good) then I prefer to put radio 2 on these days. At least Wogan and Ross are genuinely funny and you actually get some intelligent debate on the Jeremy Vine show.
