Hi,

I'm heading into NatWest on either Tues or Wed to open up a Student account.

I'm in my 3rd year and have put it off for long enough and have decided to open one now.

From the day you go in and open it, how long does it take for the overdraft to become accessible?

Thanks.

You'll be lucky.

I tried this in my second year and due to my student loan they flagged me as a bad credit risk :(.

You may have better luck with it though. I think the process can take around a week if you have all the documents with you on the day (id, birth certificate and other stuff).

From what I recall, the account is instant, O/D also (may be different if you are not existing NW customer), but it takes a few weeks for them to send you a debit card + info pack. Took me about 4 weeks to get the CC.

If you're in your third year, they won't accept UCAS letter as proof, you need a letter from your Uni.

If you've had your last year or so paying bills in and out of your account then your credit should be fine and you should be able to get an account :)

They flagged you for a student loan?

Don't 90% of students have student loans? (random guess)

Most students apply for the student account before they get their loans ;)

It was easy. I simply went in to my local natwest ... can't remember how long it to, though. Not long. I don't understand how m0r94n found it hard to give a student a student account. It's the whole point. Just go in with proof you're a student. I just took my ucas form, but would assume that would not be any use in your third year.

Hmmm, well I have a small-ish overdraft currently with Nationwide. I've already said I'll be transferring it into the interest free account.

I've got my letter saying I was accepted from Level I to Level H. :)

Yeah I've been paying bills for the last couple years and just got myself an 18 month phone contract so I'm guessing I'll be fine.

Took maybe 2 weeks for the overdraft to be accessible in branch.

Still haven't got my card though despite plenty of trying since September last year.. :/

I have a feeling Natwest only let you open a student account between June and November, although I could be wrong....

From what i know (which might not be correct) banks like to have your student loan paid into your student account...

again, might not be true

I opened my account in 30 mins if that helps, just had to have passport and letter saying I was still in uni (second year) and that was that. :)

Most of them wont give you the full overdraft untill you debit a certain amount, i just opened one with abbey and i just moved some money out of another account then moved it back again when they had give me the overdraft lol

Id get one with halifax anyway, big overdraft, and easy to use branches
