How ''safe'' is gpu overclocking now.

Reason I ask is I bought a borked 8800GT in the beginning and I had all kids of odd problem and the monkeys from a retailer took 2 days to figure out it was wrong ( it freezes all games with black or red squares throughout the screen but 3dmark was fine for hours...).

Is it safe to oc my card a bit now ? I'm on a G92 8800GTS 512mb, do these cards overclock, how much improvement from the stock 650 mhz can I expect and what's the chance it'll go to hell if I overclock it ?

not sure about that particular card but peeps are getting quite a bit of overclocking out of the new cards from both ati and nvidia, simply using rive tuner and alos in another thread someone has hacked the firmwares of cards to alterthe voltages too to allow for even more o/c

I want to play it as safe as possible though, staying away from volt changes. What's the chance I'll damage my gpu ?

I believe that as long as you stay within the temperature and voltage limits of the card, you are safe. However of course i am not liable should your card explode as the result.

the long and short is that i had that card and overclocked it for a year..no issues.

Of course its safe thats what they are made for :D

Go up in small steps as if you were ocing a cpu but just keep a close eye on temps!
Youll want to look into watercooling if you want decent oc

Out of interest how did you bork the first one?

I bought it damaged 2nd hand, the 8800gt :(.

Temps will be fine, @ stock the fan is @ 36% and it keeps the card under 80C, if I tune the fan to 60 or 70% the temp drops to below 60 at all times (iirc more like 45 C, been awhile since I fiddled with it)...
I want more performance but this was my most expensive card ever ( bought @ release for 360 euros...) so obviously I don't want to blow it up as it's a great card...

Search the fourms for others that have overclocked their 8800GT's and see what they are clocking theirs upto & temp limits.

I got quite a bit extra out of my two old 8800GTX's but they were underwater.

I would personally not want my card to hit the 80s-90s so you'll need to set the fan speeds manually.
IIRC Rivatuner lets you create fan profiles based on the temp of the card.
Basic example: 30c fan @20%, 50c fan @40%, 70 fan @60%...

I don't know why people gladly overvolt their CPUs but are scared to do it to GPUs? It's all the same stuff really!

I've just looked over my screenshots of when I overclocked and benched my 8800GTS, and it looks like the furthest I took it was 750 on the core, 972 mem, and 1750 shader :)

I would have though cpu's are more resistant to such things, I've had my C2D @ 1.6 volts for one boot accidentally in the past, nothing happened but a small temps rise. Gpu's afaik just get damaged permanently easier than cpu's. And yes, I payed 3.6x more for my gpu than my cpu. The q6600 cpu was bought for 100 euros 2nd hand, gpu was bought for 360€ new...

They are a bit more resistant but you can still clock within reason.

For example keeping the RV770 under 1.4V will not damage it and provided you can cool it properly will net you insane clocks close to 900mhz if not more. My 4870 did 915mhz on 1.35V, under water was about 35-36c full load
