how secure is whs?

As title.

Is it neccesarry to add extra security like antivirus/antispyware/firewall or will it be safe enough behind a netgear router and just as installed?

I won't be using the network for wireless (disabled), but may have to use a powerline adaptor (if that makes a difference).

Thanks guys. Not keen on the price of Avast but I guess it will be a necessary evil.
