How should I run my system?

Ok I have a 3.6ghz Q6600 and a 8800GTX both water cooled.
I have got a SMP client and a GPU2 client.

If I have both on at same time I get no more ppd than just having the gpu folding (I know this is down to gpu using some of the cpu)
Surley theres away to get better ppd than the 5000 odd i get at the min? I might as well only fold on gpu at min. Can you make the smp use 3 cores and *** gpu use 1? How should I set my system up?

Cheers

The GPU2 should be using significantly less than a whole 3.6Ghz core. Ctrl Alt Delete and check if all four CPU cores are at 100% (assuming Windows)

Sorry, I didn't reply to your post in the other thread!

Anyway, I read that you're running on XP, so you might be stuck with the GPU client using a whole core - it seems like blind luck at the moment. But you should definitely be getting more than 5000ppd. Rather than explicitly assigning the cores, it's generally easier to set priorities. I think you're running the console client, so you need to add the -configonly flag to your shortcut and set the client up to use 'low' priority instead of 'idle':

Make sure the SMP client is set at 'idle'. You should then see the GPU client using as much CPU as it needs, and the SMP client taking up the rest.

Hope this sorts it out :) You should be able to hit 7k with the right WUs, maybe 7.5.

I read the title and thought, there's only one way to run your system - flat out and red hot :D

As for your actual question, do what Mattus says - that's how I was running mine (until it all died 2 days after I left home for work for a month - some things never change ), I was getting about 7,000 PPD and my quad was only running at 3.2GHz (damn flaky Asus motherboard ).

My Q6600 at 3.4ghz and Im getting 4600ppd with both running.

Just gpu runing and its still using 100% of just core 4. and produces 4500ppd
Just SMP with 4 cores all at 100% I get 2200ppd

Runing both and im on 5600ppd. Still too low tho.

Any ideas? Shall I just run GPU client?

Yes I have. Its stressing all 4 cores at 100% just giving poor ppd. I must be doing somthing wrong tho, as system is 100% stable prime for 12 hr etc... its only at 3.4 which snt a lot bearing in mind im under water, but then im only 45C load!

I dont have any of that verbosity tho. Just reads: "C:\Program Files\Folding@Home Windows SMP Client V1.01\FAH6.22beta2-SMP-shm.exe" -smp

Maybe because im on xp32bit sp3, should I change to another operating system maybe? I have vista 64 on another machine and hate it hence im still on xp 32 bit on this machine

The verbosity bit is just for logging and helps with fahmon,

hmm could try as I think vista handles multi-cores better then xp as is shown when using the ATI client. no harm in trying any way
