I've got a lappy with Vista home installed.

Basically I want to partition of the rest of the HDD and put XP on it.

But I need to know how much to save for my vista install realistically?

(160gig hdd btw but 7.75 is partitioned for HP Recovery.)

Cheers,

G

would you be using vista at all?

if so how about a 50/50 split, this should give room for both

if not maybe 15GB for vista and the rest for xp

Nothing worse than getting 2 years down the line with an install and then find the C: partition is running out of space. Personally I always make sure the C: partition is extra big. At the moment it's 80GB but with only 36GB free... but that has all my installed software on it too.

If the drive is big enough, split the hard drive into three partitions, one for Vista, one for XP and one for your data.

I have a 29GB (told it to be 30GB) partition for Vista, and have 7.5GB left, and all I install on that drive is important Vista only stuff. All programs and personal data are on separate drives.

Although admittedly I have Vista Ultimate, which has extra crap. :p

I've decided to give Vista 99gig and XP 45gig purely cause thats how much Vista will let me shrink the current partition by to create the new one.

Would have been nice to do a 50/50 split on the current partition but it's not letting me for some reason :(

Then I've ordered a 250gig to put everything else on :D

This should be ok I think?

Been thinking of the long term myself & have a 162GB C: partition & try my best to install as little as possible on it, but 2 day old install & down to 126GB already.

my C: partition is 500GB :) - showing as 265GB free of 465GB (they mean GiB)

I'd recommend not going below 25GB if you actually want to use the vista partition, but it depends what you want to use each one for.

If that was me, I'd probably have 80GB for Data and 40GB for each OS.

edit: I just checked and my vista folder is 17.5GB... I have no idea why so big.

I've got a 20GB partition for mine and I'm currently sitting at 8.5GB free, but that's with nothing but programs and Vista itself on there. All my downloads, games, documents, music, pictures etc are stored on other partitions/drives. Seems a safe minimum size to go with though. If you're going to use Hibernation (Sleep doesn't count), System Restore or anything else like that that consumes disk space, you might want 25-30GB.

50GB home premium and just 9.5 GB free - all software is loaded into this one. If I reinstall any machines with vista, C: is always 50GB now.

DTH?
