How strict are the Royal Mail?

I sent some things that might have very slightly exceeded the 100g weight limit of a first class stamp (39p one) only talking a few grams at max.

Do they even check the weight of smaller items? A friend said that if it goes through a letterbox easily then they usually don't but unsure.

In hindsight I should have went for the 250g limit stamp but completely forgot about the weight limitations until I had posted it!

Pretty strict, they will put a note through the recipients door saying "Full postage not paid" requesting them to pay the remainder plus a £1 handling fee.

I had something sent to me the other week that was 2p short on the postage and had to pay £1.02 to get it

You sent drugs, didn't you?

I did once... That caused the acket to be about 2mm too thick and they ended up having to pay £1.03 or something stupid and a day or two later.

(Antimalarials, that needed to be taken the next day. Yeah silly sending them through the post but that was the only way she could get them...)

Probably not too much help (some cynical people would say a bit like Royal Mail in that regard :p) but I've found it varies so sometimes you'll find things marked as insufficient postage and other times something that is the same size and weight will be delivered without any issues.

It's not really worth worrying about either way - you can't do anything to change it now so just wait and see.

Funny (ish) story: we post loads of sample DVDs out using large first class stamps (under 100g) and have been doing so for over a year. Always identical. My colleague went to the post office the other day with two sample DVDs and asked to buy 20 stamps. The shopkeeper wouldn't sell him the stamps until he weighed one of the packages in his hand to which my colleague said "no, no, it's fine, I just want the stamps".

Anyway long story short and after a lot of arguments one of the packages weighed 101g and so the shopkeeper denied my colleague stamps. That's right, denied him. Absolutely ridiculous. Every package we've ever sent has got there without an extra charge as we follow them all up.

The RM must allow some leeway as every single post office set of scales are unlikely to be accurate to the gram.

Thanks for the replies guys, I have told her that I shall pay the fee if it comes down to it. I was more worried that my stuff just wouldn't get there at all as I never put a sender address so I thought they'd just be gone.

I used to work at an mot test centre that would send out letters to it customers when their mot was due. We forgot to put a stamp on one of the letters and the recipient was just told that the rm had a letter for him but he would have to pay to get it.
Eventually curiosity got the better of him and he paid for it only to discover that his mot was overdue and would cost him another £35.
He was not very happy. :(

Post office folk tend to be odd in some places. A lot of the local post offices around where I live are staffed by complete social rejects who go funny over nothing and literally make things up.

I had one telling me to calm down (Anger management style)over absolutely nothing, I don't even think I was looking at her at the time, I thought it was a joke at first.

Heh, I was waiting in a queue of about three people to collect an SD parcel I'd missed.

Lady in front of me finished and walked out the door so I stepped up to the counter and said "Hi.." Looked up, fat bird behind the counter was just glaring at me with a "What the **** are you doing look?"

I just handed over my slip and she marched off, didn't say a word to me. I was very bemused and walked out with a grin. ****

They're generally fine where i am, some even crack a joke

I sent a letter once (speeding ticket) and genuinely forgot to put a stamp on, it never got there and has never been seen since, they did sent it again though.

I don't send that much so i take it to the post office where they kindly tell me how much they're going to rob me of that day.

:D
