This is what I love about Christopher Nolan - if you don't HAVE to use Green Screen, he doesn't. He'll go out of his way to create it properly instead of just using animation, which makes the whole movie so much better
The great thing about it is that it actually made a big difference to the end product and gave the movie a unique feel that is sadly missing from many movies these days due to poorly used CGI.
Even before seeing the work involved in these scenes i had a general idea of how it was done, i just love the fact Nolan will go to this length for a certain shot when someone like George Lucas will just throw computers at it and it will look sterile in the process.
