how to block torrents!

At 14 I doubt she will know how change the hosts file, well then you never know these days! Block any unwanted sites/traffic this way manually on her computer. It's a start and requires no extra software. Example below:

127.0.0.1 websitename.com
127.0.0.1 website2name.co.uk

so i could steal for uni work and enter it my self and this would not be stealing? i am not your uni mates :L i dont even know you but u would not call this stealing... by law downloading IS stealing so what the law says even if its stupid IS law you break that and your breaking the law

You are acting a little high and almighty. This issue is never about the law, its about your sister using your internet.

I doubt there is one person on this forum that hasn't broke the law in some way or another including yourself.

Climb down from your throne and man up and tell her rather than blocking access like a coward.

James, that's not why I'm replying, he thinks infringement=stealing, that is wrong in the UK too. The other was just adding the info about myself. It doesn't matter if it's here or in the UK, piracy is not stealing by current law no matter how much the anti piracy brigade wants to make people think so.

They're also acting as if the law is holy, you can't deny that in the UK similar amounts of people don't agree with it and ignore it because they can get away with it, be it in traffic, on the internet, when drinking, etc. The law is not holy and it is disputable many laws are in for the common good and the majority agrees with all laws. You don't see people getting all high up if someone broke the speed limit on the motorway by 6mph or walked through a red light at 4am in the middle of nowhere, but with piracy, everyone seems to get up his high horse and comparing it to stealing even though it's nowhere near comparable imo.

your taking goods/services that dont belong to you its stealing

cant sorry i am too high...

You may want to tell her to use Peerblock just incase she really does get a real letter ACS LAw, regardless of who's connection she is using! ;)

Would port forwarding the torrent softwares default port to his ip be enough to stop downloads from working?

He could even port forward a whole range to his or a random ip and so block incoming connections for most stuff, just don't do common ones like http, email etc.

what the...??? thats stealing! theft IS stealing!

Unfortunately for you, the other guys are right. Downloading stuff is illegal, but it doesn't come under criminal law (ie stealing/theft).

Copyright infringement is against the law. Morally, it is murky. But then what about morals isn't a little murky here and there?

Like everyone has said its not selfish its self preservation.. no body wants a fine for something someone else did... so if anyone starts doing anything illegal on my internet connection.. poof oops i magically cut your ethernet cable and changed the router WPA key... gtfo and get your own internet lol

If you look hard enough everything on the internet is infringing copyright laws in some way, because they're so outdated but hey ho. Hyper-bowl + ignorance = these threads degrading.

You either physically cut her off (not feasible in this day and age) or educate her.

Get one of these letters from the internet and post it to yourself. Then show it to your sis and ask her to pay you £600 or whatever as you know that she is downloading music/films for free.

That'll teach her a lesson.

sorry guys but this tread is turning into a debate about if internet piracy is right or wrong... i dont care... but what i do care is I can get fined for it and i dont want in on my internet

Yeah seems the wrong place for a discussion.

I think this will work but i can't say for sure, anyone know?

Nope, it would be plagarism.

You've got to be pretty thick to assert things that are trivially false, especially about legislation on a forum that has law students and probably solicitors knocking about.

Though it's possible that I'm misreading you, as it's hard to be sure what you're saying in places.

Right, now Im done reading this:
  1. I dont care about the legality, its not legal, you sister breaking the law, its your connection, your have responsibility your parents are not at fault, no one "makes" you break the law. Simply terminate her connection and when your parents have a go tell them the truth.
  2. UPNP wont work, it will slow it down considerably right enough.
  3. Banning sites would work, a tiny bit time consuming but will work.
  4. you use it for sharing files.... well there are 1000 other ways without torrents the revamped Hotmail service is a much better alternative as it lets you send email messages as large as 10 GB.
The maximum size of an individual file that you can attach to an Hotmail message is only 50 MB but you can use a file-splitting utility like HJ-Split-gsplit-winrar to break a big file into smaller chunks and then attach them all to a single message, now thats just one route I know 100's more.
