when you put different region dvd into your mac it will ask you if you want to change the region
be careful though you can only change it 3 times though!
if you don't want to run your drive changes count down you can always use VLC

Watch your DVDs using VLC and you should be able to sidestep the whole issue. Just stop DVDplayer and then fire up VLC. Works for me.

as it happens i needed to set the region code because it is new and hadn't been set. this was stopping me from running other programs (like handbrake) but i ran dvd player and it asked me to set it, now the problems solved
