How to clean/remove thermal paste from cpu pins

Ok,

I got a laptop that keeps turning off at random moments. It's not overheating (it had that issue in the past but by changing the thermal paste and keeping the fans clean there is no overheating issue anymore).

However, it seems that some of the paste has gone in the 'holder' (is that the right word?) where the cpu's pins attach. I suspect this might be short-circuiting the system at random times?

It keeps turning off very randomly, could be a few seconds after I turn it on or after a whole day of working - so it's definitely not because of heat or any other specific issue as far as I can see.

The other odd thing is that it has a pcmcia card for wifi internet (it's an old laptop) and whenever I have to pluck it out and shove it back in (to force it to detect it, and thus connect, otherwise it will keep on 'connecting' for ever) then I get a blue screen with some kind of page system error and it will turn off.

Could this be linked to it?

Cheers for any responses.
