Hi guys

Need some advice here. I'd like to use a remote control to start the PC (cold boot) with just a remote control. I have an Asus p8z77-v pro and a silverstone case. I am not sure what I need to do. I did a few google searches and found things like IR receivers that go into the case etc and drilling holes and what not. I am not entirely sure what works with the mobo that I have. I am happy to do all the DIY myself to get this working but I just wanted to know which remote I need to buy. Is it just a USB one that I should look for or should I look at an IR module that attaches to the mobo somehow?

Much appreciated.

For cold booting you'll need an ir receiver/vfd module that needs to be connected to the 24 pin motherboard power connecter.

What case are you using? Also what remote do you have?

Had a look at the antec wire. What does that attach to? An IR receiver? Which one?

It would help if I can get a list of the kit that I need along with the a decent remote control.

I want to power up the PC as well as Power down. I want to have a single button to start Plex or any other application as well.

Guys, would really like some help on this, if this is the wrong area for this discussion, let me know and I will put it somewhere else.

What that adapter does is basically connect your 24-pin power connector to the IR module so that when the power button is pressed on the remote it will boot up the system from cold. I think the real difficulty you're going to have is going to be able to integrate an IR/VFD module into your case. Most HTPC cases unfortunately don't come with IR receivers and tying to fit one might be difficult.

That specific adapter is for the Antec fusion/microfusion cases and again unfortunately it may not not work out of the box with just any IR receiver especially a USB one without actually taking the unit apart and hard wiring the adapter to it. (Not sure whether this could actually could be done).

If your case had a normal 5.25" drive bay then a Soundgraph iMon VFD controller would work. link.

this is a good article about the imon kit. Link.

Of the top of my head I can't think of any way of doing it with you case for cold booting. Your Logitech Harmony 900 will be fine to be used with an USB RC6 IR receiver but again it won't allow cold booting.

Thanks shadow boxer. Appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I am happy to drill a hole into the case if thats whats required, just need to know the proper kit. I cant use imon, my case does not allow a 5.25 drive to be installed in the front, as it only shows a small slot for the drive bay to come out from.

Anyone else know of a generic reciever module that I can put in there to be used with a MCE remote?

Not looking at it too technically you could experiment with a module that connects to the power switch connecter on the MB and actually replace your power switch with the IR LED. Another way is to use your monitor to gpu signal as a switch if you have a remote controlled monitor, When the monitor powers down the computer does also.
