A silly, noobie sounding question. So hopefully it will generate a real quick answer. :)

I have a DVD which is legally mine. The content on the DVD has come from some home movies which I obviously own the copyright on as they are my own family. These were some old VHS tapes which have been converted to DVD format. :)

Now all I want to do is one simple action. How do I convert this DVD into a WMV file? Ideally with some free software as I only want to do this once.

I have been trying to locate software myself to do this task. Problem is the software is either far too complex, or expensive. And there are ahuge number of video terms I am trying to jam into my head - and I am getting lost.

I have managed to get Nero to convert it into "mp4". Problem is that my father actually wants it as a "wmv" file so he can do something with it with his software. :)

OK, what I do is use a bit of software called DVD Decrypter to copy the DVD contents to the harddrive, then AutoGK (Auto Gordian Knot) to encode it into XviD, but I'm not sure abuot WMV. I remember seeing something about called Windows Media Encoder, have a hunt for that.
