how to convert videos to watch on ipod touch?

i've tried dragging avi's and such into the "movies" section of itunes but no dice, anyone care to explain where i'm going wrong?

Another vote for iPodMe, good little utility.

simplicity sounds good, had a quick read on that website --does it convert dvd or mkv files?
