Had to build new PC for someone and they have an ipod with over 4000 songs on it and I need to know how to transfer the songs on the ipod the itunes folder on the library.

Itunes Ver 8 is installed

Appreciate any help cheers.

There's loads of applications around, I use Music Rescue (reminds you to pay for it every 20 or so songs whilst copying over from ipod) Think it only cost about £7 though.

just plug in the ipod - browse to it - view hidden files

copy them to the desktop - unhide them - copy into itunes

doesn't save stars and play counts....

to do that you might need to spend some cash

Ipod does not seem to get drive letter for some reason. I managed to get the old itunes stuff from the old hard drive. Is there a method to copy these files accross ?

Cheers

enable disk use to get a drive letter

--- full guide

1. Insert your iPod to the USB port.

2. If your Windows PC still doesn’t have iTunes installed, skip this step. If iTunes is already installed and prompt a message on whether if you’d like to associate this iPod with this computer and deleting its content, click No. Or else you will lose your only copy of library on iTunes. Beside, ensure that ‘Enable Disk Use’ is selected.

3. Open My Computer or Windows Explorer, the iPod should be automatically detected as a portable hard drive.

4. Click on the iPod icon or the iPod portable hard drive letter to open the contents of the drive.

5. If you don’t see a folder called “iPod Control”, it’s hidden and invisible. To unhide it so that it’s visible, go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab, and then check (enable) the option “Show hidden files and folders.” (FOR VISTA: If you have Vista and you don't see a menu, then go to Organize -> Folder and Search Options -> View tab, and then check (enable) the option "Show hidden files and folders."

6. Open the “iPod Control” folder, and then the Music folder. (For the movies, there should be a seperate folder called Movies. If not, then it should be in the Music folder.)

7. The Music folder contains the iPod’s music and videos, divided into folders. Copy the library to local computer hard drive’s My Music folder.

8. The files copied have unintelligible four-letter file names. Don't worry, you do not need to rename the songs. To reveal the names of the songs and other data tags, copy the songs from the Music folder to iTunes. iTunes will automatically rename all of the songs.

Cheers for the help.
