Hi there,

I would like to send someone quite a large file across the internet. I was thinking of uploading it onto my server that I rent for my web hosting. Sorry I'm not great with the technical terms.

How would I go about creating a download link for them too download the file onto their computer. Would I need to host it on my website first. I'd like to avoid doing this as it is unrelated.

Or are there any good free file hosts that will allow me too upload?

Cheers guys.

A. Upload to hosting service (best to encrypt first, if private), it'll be faster downloading from there than your slow uplink.

B. Use ftp software and host it from a nas/pc but it'll be far slower than a.

C. Torrent. Easily the most effective way to rapidly distribute any file, assume there's more than 1 recipient.

How would it be slower to host it from his own system if he'd have to upload it with his slower upstream in the first place? If anything it'd work out quicker to do a direct transfer since it's uploading directly to the intended recipient.

For example let's say it takes 2 hours to upload and then the recipient can download it in say, half hour. That means the total time is 2 and a half hours. If he's uploading it directly to the single intended recipient then they're downloading it as it's uploading so total time is 2 hours. Of course I realise I'm plucking completely random figures out of nowhere here but you get the idea ;)
