How many emails will you be sending? If by mass mail, you really mean mass mail, then you will need to use a company to manage your list and send your emails. If you try to mass mail through your ISP, they won't be too happy.

No, you have to upload your own list of email addresses, and they must be people who have consented to you mailing them. Then you log into your account on their website and enter your email. They send you a preview. You go back to their site, choose your list and click send.

Technically what I want to do is spam as I need to get out to a large audience and this seemed like the only way, but I am considering in option out of this way to be honest.

MailChimp works quite well for me when managing a weekly newsletter (it also does plaintext campaigns).
