i want to make a image of my c: drive with the operating system on ...just wondering what software to use to do this....so i can use the image to put onto another drive thanks.

i want to be able to make a exact copy and boot from it....ie want to get a new drive but dont want to format...ive tried a few programs it creates a copy but will not boot...i cant seem to find the inbuilt program...i know im a newbie lol

Use the inbuilt backup tool to create a system image?

Windows backup with system image included won't clone disk to disk, and you'll need a windows recovery CD.
On top of that it'll take bloody ages compared to most other imaging utils.

One thing I will say is if you clone disk to disk, make sure the new disk doesn't have a drive letter assigned to it. Sometimes windows will keep this mount point when you try to boot from the disk. Which causes all sorts of s***

i dont mind a recovery cd to do this....i can do it in win 7 but cant work it out in whs 2011
ill go back and look again lol

ok ive backup using the windows tools...can i make a boot up usb instead of a disc?

Probably but not using the built in tools. The built in tools will create a CD, which you could then rip an ISO image off and make a bootable memory stick from that.

But it's a lot of hassle for what is a really simple proceedure.

At last i can do them now ...using clonezilla.......clone drives and make images of drives ...thanks for your help on this ....now to get myself a ssd for boot on server ...
