How to delete Gmails from Outlook 2007

I'm using Outlook 2007 on a Win7 PC to access my Gmails, and as has been noted in other threads, reading and deleting a mail in Outlook does not delete it in Gmail, or even show that it's been read. Gmail's help describes how to rectify this in Outlook 2010, but the required options do not appear in 2007. Is there a way around it (that doesn't involve buying Office 2010)?

can't you configure outlook 2007 to use imap? I use live mail for gmail and it works a treat (and it's free). You do need to enable imap on your gmail account first though.

I assume your using POP3 to access your emails. As Halfmad said, ditch POP3 and use IMAP.

Thanks! Found it - I have to create a new account and choose IMAP. Editing an existing account doesn't work.
