How to delete songs from iPod?

Hi guys,

So I've got an iPod, with about 20 play lists of music on it. I no longer want 5 of these play lists on the iPod, but when deleting a play list from the iPod - it literally just deletes the play list, and leaves the music on the iPod lost in amongst the 'All Music' tab...

I've also tried going into a playlist, and deleting music from in there, then deleting the play list - this doesn't work either, and still leaves the songs hidden in the All Music tab.

I've had a look around to try and sort the All Music tab by Play List, so I could delete any music that doesn't have a play list - but I can't find such an option either?

I must be missing somthing realy obvious here, kind'a embarrassing asking such a question lol. But I'm needing help on this one if possible please :)

You need to do it from within iTunes by unticking the songs and re-syncing your iPod. There's no way to delete stuff by using the device itself.

Or you can just browse to the iPod in iTunes and then click on the songs, or highlight multiple songs and just press backspace, it will delete them from the iPod but it will keep them in the library. That's the way I do it, I also just drag songs from the library onto the icon of my iPod/iPhone, that way I don't have to worry about syncing the entire library or deselecting and selecting songs every time I want to make a minor change.

Hi, thanks for the replies.

Sorry, I forgot to mention I am using iTunes, and still cannot find a way to delete songs efficiently.

The iPod is not sync'ed to the computer, as I like to manually manage music on the device.

I've tried the backspace option suggested, but this just removes the song from the play list, and not from the device. Causing the song to be lost within the thousands of songs in the main 'Music' tab under the iPod.

Just thought I'd bump this topic, just came to re-do my iPod and got frustrated with it again >.>

Anyone know an alternative to iTunes that allows you to simply just delete a playlist and have the songs removed from the iDevice that were held within said playlist?

I don't understand what you mean - if I untick a playlist in iTunes and sync my iPod, the songs contained in it are deleted, unless they're contained inside another playlist left on there.

Deleting a track from a playlist does not delete it from the main iTunes music library, it only removes it from that particular playlist, which is sensible really. If you want to completely remove a track from iTunes delete it in the main Music library.

The problem lies because you aren't syncing the iPod.

Turn on syncing, then press backspace and when you sync it'll be gone. Delete a song within a playlist or a whole playlist, it makes no difference :)

Cheers mate, I'll try syncing the playlists next time ;)

If I set it up to sync, then delete the tunes from my PC, then re-attach my iPod later on - will it delete the tunes from it cause it can't find them on the PC?
