How to develop an invention?

So, through a combination of watching The Apprentice, Dragons Den repeats and general disillusion with my job, I think I've come up with an idea which is going to make me billions (not).

Are there any of you who have had inventions, and gone through the process of research, development, patent application etc? I remember someone here had a large thread about some laser based device but I can't find it.

How would one start off in developing an idea? Who would I need to consult or approach? I literally have no idea!
 
You need to tell us what it is first.

Edit: Actually reminds me that a few months ago I went to a iphone development workshop and we had an idea the company liked, I am not sure what's happening with it but it could go somewhere. Apart from out of the 3 people involved with the idea, only one of them has programming knowledge for this platform.

Hmm, well it is something in the field of fast food provision. I think there's a gap in the market for this, and products with a similar concept already exist (in a different market) on a large scale.
