How to diagnose a faulty CPU?

Random reboots, programs crashing, lock ups and general instability at a guess. Run Prime95 if your having problems and see if you get errors.

In a way, but those can be attributed to more than one cause. I'd say the only way to know is to test in systems that are known to be working stably and see if the problems persist in them or testing another cpu of the same type in the suspect system and seeing if problems persist. However cpus rarely fail, usually don't even startup when they do, might have the odd problem like snds, electromigration or bad cache and still run albeit unstably but thats more the exception than the rule.
