There are number of different products such as
3D Studio Max
Poser 3D
Daz 3D
Blender (Open source)
and Maya (stated above)
Although a lot of these products have great tutorials there is a big learning curve and I would assume a lot of these products work better/best with a graphics tablet for finer control over design.
As for how long to learn them then I guess that depends on you and how quickly you pick up applications and what they do. If you have any prior knowledge of 3D modelling software then this will probably help speed up with learning a new tech but expect a good 6 - 12 months to master the toolset to a decent level.
