What do I need to do to go dual screen, apart from 2 screens obviously:p

The thing that was confusing me is how can I play games and browse the web on different monitors using the same mouse and would it be possible to hook 2 x keyboards and mouse up so 2 users can do different things?

All you need is a standard graphics card with 2 outputs.

Use " Ultramon " ( software ) to configure it.

And its as simple as that.

I already have a X1950 pro 512mb GPU and 1 LG M203WA so i could grab another monitor and away I go.

How about the dual user situation though? is it possible to hook up 2 keyboards

yeh its that simple, if you plug the other screen in while the pc is on, you will need 2 restart it! as for the keyboard and mouse, i aint 2 sure!

You can, but all that will do is mean you spazz out the system when you are playing a game and try to do something on the second screen.

I currently have dual screens, and have had them many times in the past. If you click the mouse off the 'gaming screen' and onto your desktop on the 2nd screen then you will drop to desktop. Plugging in extra hardware like mice/keyboards will just confuse the PC...like using a touchpad on a laptop, and having one finger on it and tapping another finger on the pad nearby, it'll make hte mouse spazz out.

I have a media keyboard with a builtin joystick which is a mouse, and had it plugged into my main system, I was using the PC, and my mate picked up the wireless keyboard and started playing with the mouse...sending my cursor around the screen.

Ultramon will allow you to easily have two taskbars without Windows being a pain about it. I'm not sure if it is supported by Vista yet. It is also a pay for program.

-=EDIT=-
Oh, and setting up the actual dualies is really very simple, as has been said. :)

You will only be able to have 1 " active " window/game running at once.

You can game on 1 screen and look at a browser on the other screen , but as said above , if you click on it the game will reduce to desktop.

I used dual screens for photo editing + 3d modelling.

Photoshop in 1 screen and original picture in the other , also useful for 3d modelling you can use the 2nd screen for viewing renders.

ive found not all games behave the same.

some focus the mouse propperly, ad you cant even get if out of the game window (screen) others dont focus it atall and you are forever clicking out of the window
of the latter there are a few options:

- mouse works as normal IN GAME even when off the game screen (mouse look etc)
- mouse doesnt work atall IN GAME when off the screen, but game doesnt minimise (RTS tend todo this) this alows you to do other things in other windows as normal sometimes trigers what i call a re-forcus on both screens (brief pause and re-sync both screens like when you change res)
- clicking anywhere outside game window minimises game. howw the game reacts depends on the game... usualy they minimise peacefully. some tend to crash or be unable to re-gain mouse focus.

some examples;
Wow - run windowed with the maximised option. behaves perfectly, but wont enable ATI 3d clocks.
NWN - doesnt grab mouse propperly, becomes hard to do things close to sides of the screen, if you click out, it doesnt minimise BUT when you click back it rarely grabs KB/mouse focus making it un-usable. akes a lot of ALT+tab to egt it working...
DS2 - much the same as NWN only the lack of use of the screen edge becomes infuriating!
NFSU - behaves pretty well. sometimes minimises, sometimes grabs mouse propperly.. usually get issues with "stuck" keys, eg, you hold left, click out of game, go back and left will keep being held even if you let go. - have to tap t a few times to release.
UFO Afterlight - running full screen grabs mouse propperly, you cant get out of game window. running windowed - doesnt enable ATI 3d clocks, ALSO - (important) only 1 screen will tend to work, and it seems random per computer. i can only use windowed on the secondary screen, but my housemate can only use on primary!

I have dual monitors but i dont know how to go about playing a game across both monitors or playing a movie across both, has anyone got any ideas as how to do this? I have tryed just stretching wmp across both, but the screen with the smaller amount of video on the screen will be black instead of video being there

I was setting up a dual-display setup yesterday and noticed the same thing?

I went into the Media player options and changed the overlay options to *High Quality* and then its works fine.

I dont know, it doesnt make any difference whether it is on or off. Ive got wmp11 so thats why it looks a bit different i think.

I dont know why it doesnt work across both monitors though :(

Games and dual monitors really don't go together. Fps games have the crosshair in between the screens making them impossible to play, and almost every game you play will be stretched beyond belief because they don't support a 16:5 aspect ratio.

Yeah its a pity that although I have seen some pictures of gaming set-ups using three screens.

I wonder if there are any games that work well with two screens though, even if it was just having one main/action screen and the 2nd monitor filled with game options/command icons etc?

I've seen a dual monitor setup used for wow, with basically everything on the 2nd monitor like groups, chat functions etc. So the other screen is purely left with the character and the surroundings.

SC supports 2 screens. - 2nd usualy used for tactical overlay.

and given the horiffic cpu dependancy i - and most others i expect can get away with having both screens zoomed into the action without to much slowdown.

I have read from Here that ATI cards cant do multi monitor gaming as well as nvidia
We're not sure why ATi's cards don't support spanning modes. Most likely, the driver is to blame. The driver treats ATi multi-monitor cards like two individual devices, each with its own driver. As a result, ATi's cards have to be considered second choice for dual-monitor gaming setups.

Is there a way around this?
