I have just got some homeplugs and I want to test their speed quickly and easily without having to setup sharing so that I move files around to test speeds. Is there a simple piece of software for this? Or should I simply measure internet connectivity speed from the homeplug that is not attached to the modem router?

Well for any proper measurement you'll need access to two computers which are located at either end and some kind of data will need to be passed between them.

jperf (or iperf if you prefer not using java) will do the job without worrying about actual files to copy up and down.

Also recommend jperf. I noticed when I set the TCP Window size manually to maybe 64kb then I'd get the max throughput between the homeplugs.
