Managed to pick up a discount copy of farcry. Never played this game before.

I am unable to activate "paradise" mode. I have searched the forums and it seems this issue was raised in the following post

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17685765&highlight=farcry;+paradise

But it was never answered. How do I enable paradise rendering. All it allows me to use is "default". Am I right in thinking I need to download some patches from the website?

Thanks

Awesome game though. A welcome change from Oblivion, let me tell you.

If/when you get the latest patch, 1.41 I think it is, you will find your mouse will not work in game, this can be fixed by fitting 'Default' for the controls (or similar) in the options. :)

paradise mode is available in game in the video options bottom right hand side.

offers few options, paradise mode, imporved renderer, cold mode, cartoon mode.

take you pick, no patches needed.

r_hdrrendering 7

will enable HDR :D You need to disable AA though to make it work properly ( I beleive both can be done at the same time with a 8800? Not sure )

On HL2:Lost Cost I'm sure my X800 did HDR and AA at the same time. I could b remembering wrongly, but I really don't think I am  I think it was just nVidia cards that couldn't do them both?

The latest official patch is 1.4.

The "Unofficial 1.41" you may have seen around is just one guys effort and hardly anyone in the EU is using it.

To unlock the video render settings, you need to
1. Patch the game; the game needs to recognise that you can support the advanced rendering, an unpatched game doesnt recognise anything above a 5000 series NVIDIA. While it may work for some, it is the exception rather than the rule.
2. Set the video settings to High or Very High.

Concurrent AA & HDR isnt officially supported by the game. It was included in the BETA 1.4 but had to be removed due to issues they encountered.

Is the 1.41 better than 1.4 for singleplayer though?

Yep, it fixes the material change for the "see through" issue back to 1.33 settings.

Only thing is if you join a 1.4 or XTv3 Beta MP server with the 1.41 files installed you will get kicked and may get banned...

X1xx0 cards can run HDR + AA, and I also believe X800/X850s can aswell.

No nvidia card can below the 8800.
Technically the X800 series cant do HDR and AA either. The X800 / X850 cannot run true HDR because they do not have Shader model 3.0 support - only shader 2.0
HOWEVER
Some game do not use Hardware HDR they can implement it through SOFTWARE. Half Life 2 is an example of this, and with the latest Far Cry patch HDR can be enabled with AA as well. Software HDR can be run with Anti Aliasing - my Geforce 6800 can do HDR + AA in Lost Coast

Most companies simply use hardware HDR, which requires a card with full shader model 3.0 support to run.

Only the X1*** series ATI (and obviously the X2k series) and the Nvidia G80 series cards can run true floating point HDR at the same time as Anti Aliasing

What does Paradise mode do?

I turned it on, but didn't notice a difference.

The draw distance is terrible, by the way. Is there anything I can do to increase it?

Sniping with a silenced MP5 is hard enough as it is, without the buggers disappearing if I crawl back a smidge...

Stupid question: do I need a 64bit OS or will running 64bit Far Cry on Windows XP with a Core 2 Duo be enough?

Will it improve performance, decrease it, or change nothing except the draw distance?

Not a stupid question, but also not a simple answer...

To run the proper 64 bit patch, yes you need a 64bit OS.
You can run the content from the 64bit patch in 32 bit (there is a mini mod that installs it.) Ive never tried it, but im told that the performance hit on a current system isnt too bad.

That might not be the draw distance you are after though...
In a map the overall draw distance is a function of view distance and fog. The usable max in FC was 800 yds.

However the Level of Detail changes, which effect the way in which textures change as you get closer and when objects and characters are visable is controlled seperately through individual object settings and specific CVARs.

If you adjust the CVARs that control these and them go into a multiplayer server you will almost certainly end up banned, so exercise caution if you decide to experiment...

Some are accessible through the advance tab on the Far Cry configurator, others are only available through the console.
If you open the console and type "\dump" then press tab it will complete the command. Press return and it will generate a file in the Far Cry root directory "consolecommandsandvars.txt" this lists all the console commands and if you are lucky explains what they do!

Thats the difficult way to do it, now for the simple:
What is your rig spec, what is your game patched to and what settings are you running at? Can you post a screenie of the distance that they are popping in an out of view?

If you are using the MP5 do you realise that the fully auto usable distance in SP is only 150 meters anyway?

Core 2 Duo E6600 at stock. 2GB DDR2 6400 RAM. Radeon X1900XT
Far Cry 1.4
I'll try a screenshot in a bit.

also adds extra content, including higher rez textures on everything. very good to have and also works on 32bit version now.

and it runs nicely on an ageing 9800 pro :)
