how to get 1920x1080 across vga

hi all my dad use's a vga cable from his gtx260 to his samsung tv @1080p through a vga cable and runs sweet i have got a benq G2420HDBL conected to a hd 4870 through vga and it will not mirror the picture it sends to my lg hd tv @ 1080 which runs through a dvi-hdmi cable on it if that makes sense
 
I also run a samsung TV at 1920x1080 through a vga.... just plugged it into the ATI card and it worked.... but for some reason it won't work on DVI-HDMI even tho it says it should. Ah well... with a good shielded VGA cable I get a perfect picture anyway.
 
but on the panel it is saying 1920x1080 and the same in nvidia control panel (on my dad's pc) and it is running at 1080 at you can clearly see the diffrence from 720p to 1080p i kknow there is a few diffrent vga leads there are analoge and digital is there any diffrence between them ?
 
As said above, VGA is an analogue signal. DVI/HDMI are digital.

same VGA cable can be used with a variety of supported VGA resolutions, ranging from 640x400px @70 Hz (24 MHz of signal bandwidth) to 1280x1024px @85 Hz (160 MHz) and up to 2048x1536px @85 Hz (388 MHz).

my guess is vga-a only goes up to 1280x1024 and vga-d goes to 2048x1536 hence why when my dad bought a longer lead it would only run at 720p

With a TV, I think they've limited the resolution you can use via VGA because VGA has no copy protection built in. On my TV, the highest res is 1280x1024 over VGA, over HDMI I can do the full 1080p. However, my dell monitors can do 1920x1200 over VGA no problem. So it's an issue with TVs and copy protection.

VGA is all analogue, there's no such thing as a cable for 1280x1024 etc. Faster rates will need a higher quality one with better high-frequency response etc., won't make it stop working though, likely just get a bit blurry etc.

That's only true assuming you bought an absolutely terribly made cable.
 
some tv's limit the res that vga can be displayed at.

i have a 1080p tv, but it will only go upto 1300x768 through vga, its just a limit of the tv

It's to do with copy protection, so that you can't record a signal in 1080p.
 
I used to have an LG telly and it would allow for 1920x1080 via the VGA port. Sadly the first and 2nd units died within 3 weeks, and the Sharp i replaced it with had restriction to 1280x1024 via VGA.

Then I got a 5m HDMI instead and went back to 1920x1080 :)
