My website( http://readyselectstart.com ) started a few months ago and despite trying to make it more appealing i'm only getting about 10 visitors a day.

My website is a tech blog and also has some specialist projects(which seem to attract about 2 out of the 10 visits roughly).

I've tried using SEO and my website and pages do appear in search engines, but not many people seem to visit, i certainly don't get many return visitors.

I've got a Twitter feed for the site and a Facebook group, but still not many visitors are coming to my site.

Am I doing something wrong or is there something more that needs to be done?

I like my website but i'm not sure anyone else does

Why would anybody read it? It looks very generic to say the least.

I'm surprised you're getting 10 unique visitors a day! How many of those are from OcUK?

As Russinating has mentioned, you need to think about why people would visit your site.

At the moment, the majority of your content seems to be in your blog. I would change the site so the blog is the first thing people are shown when visiting the site. It's much more interesting to read than the current homepage and should also help your SEO.

Also, I would use the blog to posts updates about the site and your projects rather than using the current main page. It may also be better to focus your blog posts to a specific subject. I see that your blogging about whatever interests you which is fine, but if your aim is to attact more visitors then they are more likely to visit a site which is focused to gaming, or focused to mobile phones etc. I would be more inclined to read the site on a regular basis if it was specifically about a subject I was interested in.

Hope this helps :)

That helps a lot, thank you

I'll put my blog on the first page, i'll try and put more content that will entice people in.

I like it to look clean and easy to read as many blogs and tech websites are really messy and clogged, but with more content in view it'll hopefully keep people coming.

As for specialising a bit more i'll maybe see what i can do about that

Edit: i'll also correct those broken links
I'm also hoping to get some people to write articles about specific parts of the website, so someone for mobile phones and also a friend will be blogging on a music section which should help hopefully. But i'll certainly brighten it up and make it inviting

Look at how a new visitor sees it. White page, text, and a bright green ad fishing for sponsors. I see you're using wordpress, why not use one that is still clean looking but abit more exciting, with proper side bar support for various things. Also move your twitter thing up, no one will see it there!

Go here to the clean and minimal section and see if any take your fancy. A website can still be aesthetically pleasing and clean and easy to read. I like this one personally, they are also all free.

Sort your onpage SEO out. Your headings are all wrong, you're missing title attributes in places and your permalinks could be better, just from an initial glance.

You all so need to increase your backlinks, preferably with some decent anchor text. At the moment you're main backlinks are from a forum, these will be very low quality (but every little helps), try and get some better quality ones with some better anchor text.

And why does it go to a landing page first then redirect to the category? could harm SEO

To be honest, any advice I could give you is probably useless - as I barely get any traffic myself!

My traffic seems to vary a lot... for instance - yesterday I had 23 vistors, today I had 7.

I seem to get the most vistors the day or so after I've written a new post...

Maybe I'm just crap at this :p

You have a VERY niche website, it's never going to be flooded by visitors.

Exactly... I try to make it a little more broad by branching out and posting on related subjects - and it seems to help a little.

I just need to get about 1000x the content I have at the moment ;)

Although this fella seems to be doing pretty well for himself! http://blog.sqlauthority.com/stats/

I've started to make some changes.

As for permalinks i've had to use the default wordpress permalinks due to hosting the page on a Windows Server which involves lots of tinkering to get working with better permalinks.

I'm going to find a better theme as many of my problems originate from this theme(hence redirects on links at the top and the widgets being at the bottom of the homepage)

I'm also going to get more images and try and brighten up the site

Thanks for the positive feedback on where I can improve my site :)

Wordpress and permalinks...hmmm you would be much better getting them sorted than not, they influence seo quite a bit (title is in the url) and some plugins fail to work properly without permalinks. The theme is quite boring, and I know you want it clean but it just appears like there isn't actually much going on, ie that there isn't that much info. Install some plugins that will help, yoast seo for starters. You're out there in a huge sea of tech blogs, you need to stand out somehow. Can you get some reviews on there of new stuff? Video reviews seem popular at moment in your chosen area can you do some? Have you got a facebook page, everyone else is doing them...

And finally, good luck and enjoy what you're doing....it makes a difference!

changing permalinks is quite tough on Windows Server 2k3. Going to work on changing it though for SEO purposes.

I've got a Facebook group by the same name and Twitter feed. i'm thinking of doing videos for the website which will both add content and traffic from YouTube.

How many followers / friends on facebook do you have?

I've only just started blogging and in the first week I've had about 350 views, 100 views a day recently, I advertise it on twitter, using my personal profile. I'm not really writing with specific parameters, just whatever I've been doing that day and trying to make it humorous as possible.
I've had good reviews from friends, but the site does need a bit of work done to it.

It works on mobile devices too, which is nice!

link in sig :p

how did you manage to get so much?

Facebook has about 16 followers and only about 12 on Twitter. Had over 1000 views in the last few months, getting about 20 per day not counting OcUK

I do have my website to work on mobile platforms too.

I wish i could get my site to be as popular

I'd consider Linux but my home server is also a file sharing server for my home network, print server, mail server and also game hosting. I don't know how to set all that up to work on my network in Linux

I've no idea, and wish I could help you out.

Every time I post a new article I link it on Twitter, people aren't going to navigate their own way to the site. The way the web works at the minute, people are lazy, anything to avoid typing in a url is a bonus, so linking is important.
Not to mention people forget, so reminders can attract more traffic, but on the flipside, too much is seen as spamming, so it's all about getting the balance right.

To be honest I don't really worry about how many views are coming through the door, it's nice to have loads, but ultimately I enjoy writing the articles and it gives me a chance to share with friends what I've been up to recently. That's my purpose for the blog.
