How to get the best out of headset?

I have a Corsair Vengance 1500 V2 headset.. I have installed the software but I am unsure on how to configure this...

If I want it 7.1 and I enable this in the software, in windows sound panel do I also need to set the speaker configuration to 7.1 too - or leave this as stereo? Also what about options such as full range speakers?

I'm a little unsure how this works with it being USB and software based..

i have the same headset and did not think much of it untill i downloaded razor surround software, easy to setup and sounds so much better

I use the same but original version, the software is terrible so i'm just using Windows drivers right now but I too was thinking about trying the razer software alternative...

Essentially you leave it in stereo as its two drivers, the software does the mixing and decides how to make it 'sound' 7.1. I'm no audio expert but it mostly depends on how the program is outputting sound, i.e. if the source is stereo you won't get surround, gaming you should be fine either way.
