ok so weve been trying for ages to get this xbox 360 onto live, the setup is :

xbox 360 ---- into PC network card ---- out of PC built-in ethernet ---- router

each time the xbox runs its test it fails at the IP address
ive looked at some guides on xbox.com but it still doesnt pass that test, if anybody has any help or a guide to follow it would be greatly appreciated!

Off the top of my head, I would say he has to enable Internet Connection Sharing (from properties of the NIC going to the router). And I think the cable from the 360 to the PC should be a crossover cable (although I am not 100% on this).

One quickie, if 360 is wired to pc and this is wired to router, why can't the 360 have a cable to the router?

If it is a case of you only have 1 ethernet cable "cabled" in some way to your upstairs, then I would suggest sticking a hub on the end of that cable and then have 2 seperate cables going to the pc and 360 seperately. (A switch would be better but a hub is prob cheaper and will do just a good a job on a small network assuming you are not hammering it).

Any more details for his setup (or wiring) would help us, to help you. :)

We do need to establish how you are connecting the PC to the router.. wireless or wired?

And then you can decide whether to put a hub as rp2000 suggests on that wire, which would be best.

But ultimately, i imagine your router is using 192.168.0.# as its IP addressing. So your PC might be 192.168.0.2 and then your xbox should be 192.168.0.3

Your PC needs to share its incoming internet connection, so the one that is 192.168.0.2

Your PC will gateway through the router, so its gateway is 192.168.0.1 and your XBOX's gateway will be the PC, i believe, so its gateway will be 192.168.0.2

I would imagine you're using a crossover cable, but check just in case, i think the one supplied with the xbox is a crossover cable.. so if you're using that you are fine.

I will be back to see how you are doing.

Awww how kind :D

Gord's advice is one way of getting the 360 and PC up and running.

A non technical solution would be to buy a cheap network switch/hub and connect that to the router via ethernet, then connect the 360 and PC seperately to the switch/hub. This way you don't need the PC on for the 360 to be able to connect to LIVE!.

You need a crossover cable (the one in the box is only a standard patch cable)

You must enable ICS in windows and if you use nortons antivirus you have to open the correct ports in the software there is a useful guide on xbox.com on ICS.

Oh and who is your ISP as that can make a dif. to how you setup

Right, i'm your man with the xbox beef :p the set up is, xbox ---(via ethernet)--- my computer (upstairs) ---(via ethernet)--- router (netgear DM602), thats basically it, but theres an extra computer downstairs so... i'm gonna set the downstairs to share internet then mine to share and then in theory it should work, but we'll see, i'll let you know how it goes, cheers for the comments though :D

I'd still vote for a seperate switch to go betwen the router and pc/xbox.

My own setup here is as follows (house has 1 ethernet cable to each room):

Speedtouch router ->- 3Com Gigabit switch ->- My PC
............................................->- My Xbox 360

3Com Gigabit switch ->- Asus Gigabit switch ->- Bro 1 PC
............................................->- Bro 1 Xbox 360

3Com Gigabit switch ->- 3Com 100/10 switch ->- Bro 2 PC
............................................->- Bro 2 Xbox 1

3Com Gigabit switch ->- Unbranded 100/10 switch ->- Bro 3 PC
............................................->- Bro 3 Xbox 360

Hold up there,

Let me get this right.. your xbox is upstairs in the same place as your #1 PC which is wired to the router downstairs, the router downstairs is also wired to #2 PC downstairs..

#2 PC downstairs should have nothing to do in this equation apart from take up an IP address

You cannot share your downstairs connection and your upstairs connection because windows only allows you to use 192.168.0.1 as the connection to which you have shared. This also causes problems if you are using 192.168.0.# for your IP addresses, because your router will want to be 192.168.0.1 and so will the connection you have shared to, so the network will try and use the same IP twice, which doesnt work. So my router is IP addressing with 192.168.1.1 and that allows me to use windows ICS.

If you fail, please draw a simple picture, stating which machine has which IP address. How many ethernet cables there are and where they are going.

Your ADSL router has 1 ethernet and 1 usb port (if I remember the model right) so I am guessing you are already using ICS to make your upstars computer work from your downstairs one? I can only guess your downstairs PC has 2 network cards, but we can discuss more after you pass/fail your test.

edit: if i understand your setup right 2 cheapo 2 port hubs would fix your probs. One on the end of your netgear, and one at the ethernet cable at the top of the stairs. ICS is a crappy solution as you have to leave one PC on at all times.

I didnt know the router, so i assumed it was a router/switch in one and thats how he was getting the net to his PCs and xbox.. but if he is using ICS already to get the net from his downstairs PC up to his PC upstairs then he cant pass it on again AFAIK to the xbox because windows' ICS IP (192.168.0.1) will already be used and he will have to buy a switch/hub wotsit.

This is a non-issue almost, set the router to some other IP. I dunno why people are always hung up with having .1 for their gateway. On a lot of enterpise kit it is normal to have 254. But even with home kit you can change the LAN side IP to be whatever you want.

I'm sorry RP2000 you've failed ;)
It's rp200 for now :D get with the program.

I dont know if we are on the same line. I was talking about the IP windows says "You have to use" in order to use ICS. Can you change the windows' ICS IP? Ive always just taken for granted that windows wants 192.168.0.1 for its ICS. If you ever try to share to a connection that doesnt use 192.168.0.1 it goes "BONK" you must use 192...

Interesting. I would need to check, I have not used ICS for yonks, so cannot say for certain, but I meant change the router to be 192.168.0.254, still on the same subnet (using 255.255.255.0).
