This applies to the p1102w model, which caused me 4 hours of frustration yesterday, but probably also to other recent HP models, so posting in the hope that it might save someone else from suicidal / homicidal inclinations...
Basically, out of the box this printer thinks it's a usb mass storage device, not a printer. Hence when installing hplip no printers are detected and it doesn't work.
Sadly you need access to a windows box/partition to fix this:
Boot into windows, install the printer drivers from the cd supplied.
Then open up the cd, open the UTILS directory, and run SIUtility.exe
Follow the onscreen instructions to disable "smart install" on the printer.
The printer now knows it's a printer, not a usb stick.
Boot back into linux, rerun hp-setup as root, hey presto, everything works.
Why HP have done this is a mystery to everyone, including themselves I think, but hey, this is the company that writes a 5k printer driver and then wraps it in a 500MB installer...
Good little laser printer BTW.
