My situation yesterday was being stuck behind someone doing 25 the whole way, and even slower on small bends.

Came across a stretch where I had good visibility (road conditions perfect) and no buildings/pedestrians either side and pulled out to overtake. Initially did 30-35 on speedo to overtake and the driver starts speeding up and he must have hit 40 but I made the gap before visibility ahead would have made it dangerous to stay out of my lane.

My other option was to brake sharply and slot back in behind. Which of the two options is safest?

edit:

Third option is not to have attempted the overtake I suppose.

situation depends on the speed limit for that road..

40 mph. But I think that is irrelevant, don't need a speed limit to say what is safe and what isn't.

The speed limit could have been NSL and it'd be just as safe or unsafe.

The other thing you have to remember is that I wasn't expecting anything like this to happen, otherwise would have just floored it and my car isn't fast either.

Some people cox you into overtaking them flooring it as they think it is funny, or to prove they have a better car, or something along them lines.

Only ever had it twice myself and i kinda knew that they were going to do it so i made sure i was in 2nd and went for it. They of course put their foot down but i managed to get past. They then zoomed past me at a million mph.

I just turned off and went a different way home to avoid round two, normally what i do but not always an option depends on where you are.

The second time was a drivers dream. I got past them and they kept flooring it right upto my bumper to intimidate me. I went down a road where i knew there was a police guy doing a random speed check as i was there a few minutes earlier. Anyway i went over the hill and he floored it again at the right time. He then got stopped by the police and got done for speeding :)

Drivers like that need to read the Highway Code again.

Being overtaken. If a driver is trying to overtake you, maintain a steady course and speed, slowing down if necessary to let the vehicle pass. Never obstruct drivers who wish to pass. Speeding up or driving unpredictably while someone is overtaking you is dangerous. Drop back to maintain a two-second gap if someone overtakes and pulls into the gap in front of you.

I had something similar. Driving at night toward hexham doing 60, car in front doing 40/45 ish. Over took said car. They then proceeded to speed rather fast to overtake me and slow back down to 40/45 in front. This happened a couple of times. You just ask why? At the time I was in my rover. Perhaps that was why.

Non related, but was taught on bikes to pass as fast as possible and that Wilts Pol will not do a rider for speeding when over taking as long as he backs down to speed limit the other side.

If they are driving like an idiot I feel they will speed up to block a safe overtake, ill just make sure I use 2nd to pass. Thankfully most people I've encountered who drive like this have had ~100hp cars, so easy overtakes no matter what they do.

*edit* It does depend on the speed limit/surroundings though. I wouldn't view 90 in a NSL during an overtake as bad, but I wouldnt do 35mph in a built up area to overtake, I'd just suck i up and wait for a passing opportunity.

Get in front, slam on the brakes, stand and bang, take their wallet, find their address, murder their family, nothing less.

Or just accelerate so they don't have a chance to speed up.
