I have a few framed photographs, one is roughly the size of a 40" TV that I like to hang up but never got round to it because the walls are all stud plaster wall. I know that I need to find the stud and I know that they should be 600mm apart, the question is how do you find it?

How do you guys tackle hanging a large photo?

drill a hole, insert wall plug (should be a fairly tight fit, dont make the hole to big), screw the picture hooks into these wall plugs.

I doubt you need to find the stud for a picture.

lots of heavy items are mounted using wall plugs

Don't think I've ever had any luck with proprietary plasterboard fixings, for one reason or another it turns into a bodge, if you're thinking long term then pick up a stud as you say they should be 600mm apart so not hard to find, they will be either timber or metal C / I studs, as long as you fix into these then happy days.

Alternatively if you need a picture to be central or in a certain place then cut a slot and feed in a pattress using screws to hold then grip fill to the back of the plasterboard, fill over and paint but it will be behind whatever you are putting up so perfection is not required.

My 40" tv is actually mounted to plaster board using the specific fixings on the wall bracket, no stud-locating necessary. 3 years on and not a wobble. I'm sure your picture will be fine with a couple of similar bolts and wire hung between them...

To answer how to find studs, either tap on the wall and find it by listening to the change in sound, or get one of these:

Usually find these things unreliable.

A strong magnet moved over the wall will usually let you find the nails and therefore the studs. Like everyone is saying though the plasterboard should be fine using decent fixings, if you look up it's strength rating it's a lot higher than you'd think.

Wall plugs to hang something the size of a 40" TV? really?

Somehow i got this fear the plasterboard will just get ripped out from the weight.

have you actually ever browsed the wall plug section of a diy store? some wall plugs are pretty massive and can hold a lot of weight

heres the shirt i was on about. framed in timber with a perspex front. dimensions are 74cm x 90 cm and its only supported by brass picture hooks with double nail fixings, 3 in total although I think its only hooked onto the two outer hooks.

this is the type of picture hook I'm using.
