I would look at potential sources of interference and changing the wireless channel first. If you have an Android phone download wifi analyzer (US spelling intentional) and use that to check which channels are in use and change to an unused one before buying anything.
if you haven't installed the specific updated drivers that can help too. Formatted a HP stream or whatever it is and the default drivers you would get about 1bar of signal if you were further away than about 5m, with the default drivers. Installed specific ones from HP and it went up to max signal when more like 40m away.
Is it possible if you could use the 5Ghz spectrum? There are a lot less devices currently using this spectrum which allows more space/less interference from other devices on the same channels.
Only problem is that 5Ghz is not as great as 2.4ghz punching its signal through walls etc so its signal strength drops off quicker.
