As the title of the thread states, I have a wireless connection at home, the issue is my house has very thick solid walls its built like a bunker, does any one have any tips to improve signal, like position of the router.

Any ideas, I thought about replacing the router with a better model or getting new network cards, or even better aerials for the devices on the network.

Anyone got any advice of which route would provide the better solution??

Can spend around £100-£200 max on the solution.

Possible options.

1) Router position, walls may be thick, but doors and floors are generally made of wood. Position the router where line of sight is only blocked by wood if possible. Avoid locations where the signal may have to pass through central heating pipes etc.

2) High gain antenna, if they fit to your router, and/or network cards.

3) Hybrid wireless/cable system. Use wired links between wireless bridges etc, to reduce distances between wireless devices and access points.

4) Fully cabled cat5 network. How are your DIY Skills.

5) Ethernet over mains. Speeds range from 14 to 200mbps.

Thanks for the info, I may try and reposition the router, I am doing building work in the next few weeks so I have considered implementing my own wired network as I believe it will add value to my house in the future.

The current router is the bt voyager 2100 I beleive, would I get better performance, mainly distance if a brought a new router such as a linksys or D-Link.

MAny Thanks in advanced.

If you are going to wire in an ethernet network, use category 6/a cabling rather than standard category 5/e as it'll be future-proofed quite considerably (cat6a cables operate at upto 10Gb/s)
