got all my new hardware, trying to install windows on my ide hard drive as i broke the cable on the sata one so need a sata cable to get it to work.

i want to have xp on my 160gb wd caviar ide 7200, and my games on the sata barracude 7200.10

but when i boot into bios it doesnt detect any ide devices,

ide channel 0 master [none]
ide channel 1 master [none]
ide channel 2 master [none]
ide channel 3 master [none]
ide channel 4 master [none]
ide channel 4 slave [none]
ide channel 5 master [none]
ide channel 5 slave [none]

Drive A [none] (which is correct!)

however when i put my xp disc into me IDE dvdrw it spins up and seems to be detected, but when i press enter nothing happens.

any ideas ? ive took the driver off which the ide hard drive says to do to get it to run as master on its own, as the sata isnt connected.

cheers

done that, said to take jumper out, so i have.

is it because my ide cable has a tag on the longest adaptor saying "master"

because if i plug that in my seconday adaptor on the ide cable wont reach my cd drive which is at the top of the case ?

i found a longer ide cable, got it installed as master, still doesnt work, set it in the bios to boot as raid / ide so ide ports = ide ports, still doesnt work so let it boot up and i get

DISK BOOT FALURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

so i insert windows disc into dvd drive, press enter, theres a 5 second blank screen and the disk boot failure comes on.

so looks like it wont work with my hdd and dvd drive. no idea why either.

what motherboard is it??

as above if you press F8 a few times whil the systes is booting then cchoose the cd/dvd drive it should find the xp cd m8

This happened to me once, but it was found in My Computer, so i had to format the drive, and then recover all the information using a program. Eventually it did work though :)

If the board is not detecting any of the drives i would check every possible setting in the bios, put it back to default settings, if that doesnt work, then i think your ide controller is FUBAR

Got another pc you can put the new disk into so as you can initialize and format it through control panel/administrative tools/computer management/disk management?
