im having a problem installing vista 64 bit on my new system, it hangs at loading screen.

i was told i need to install the motherboard drivers so that my SATA HD is recognized by the motherboard before vista will notice the SATA HD is active.

how do i install the mobo drivers before the OS?

I would presume Vista64 already has all the drivers you'd need for SATA, so it's probably some other problem.

Vista is pretty good with drivers, xp usually needs the driver disks for newer motherboards, may be another problem as your install is failing so early. Scratched cd/dvd or dodgy hd?

Vista install works without needing the HDD until such a point where it asks you where to install it. It will either show you the disc to choose to install on (so it's found the drivers), or it will ask you for a USB drive/CD/Floppy with the drivers on.

If you're not getting that far, you have some other problem.

ive sorted it, the hanging was going on for 10 minutes, when 10 minutes was over it loaded installation normally, but it shouldnt hang for 10 minutes with no display that its loading, or people will think they have an issue.

You most probably do have some sort of an issue, albeit non-fatal. Just something the installer doesn't like or couldn't load. It's not usual to hang for 10 minutes!

how do i know what to look for? all the drivers have been installed.
It'll be fine now, but there was probably some driver oddity in the things Windows PE was trying to load before putting you into setup - either bad drivers, wrong drivers, something not responding or something. It probably takes a scattergun approach trying to load as many generic drivers as possible. Mine's hung a long time in setup before, but at least it was showing something on the screen at the time!

Don't worry about it now - just saying that ordinarily it shouldn't happen!

The first time I ran setup, I had just the green wallpaper and a mouse cursor for several minutes. I thought I had a defective DVD. :o

In my case, disabling the floppy drive controller in the BIOS cured that 'hang'.
