Hi, I have just installed gOS Linux and am trying to view my Windows 7 HTPC. I am running version 3.0.28a. But I need to install samba-3.4.3.tar.gz that I've downloaded from Samba's website.

But this is where I'm stuck, how do I install the package?

Thank you

Lee

If it has 'add/remove' or 'synaptic' use it to install samba. Every application can be installed through them very simply.

Ah sorry! I don't think you can just add the tar.gz to synaptic, I've never tried to. Usually you can get a PPA/repo from samba that you add that will give you the latest in synaptic, but I did a quick google and couldn't find any PPA for samba :( I have version 3.4.3 in my synaptic but I have ubuntu 9.10.

One thing you could try is in synaptic go to settings->repositories and check 'community maintained software (universe)', and then reload. You might get the latest version in synaptic now.

There is quite a bit to do to set up samba from source as you can see by the how-to on their website but it may be your only option, unless you wait for a while maybe the new samba version will appear in synaptic.

Maybe someone else can give you guidance on how to install it from source as I've never done it for samba, for various reasons :p
